1.5m Homes At Risk From Melting Sea Ice!

October 30, 2023

By Paul Homewood

A friend spotted this item on Talk TV a couple of weeks ago:

  image

https://watch.talk.tv/watch/replay/18841536

The reporter claimed that up to 1.5 million UK properties face the increased risk of flooding because of “rising seas triggered by melting Arctic sea ice”. (At 7.05 am)

They seemingly are not aware that melting sea ice does not contribute to sea level rise!

She has filed a complaint, but Talk TV seem slow in responding. I suggest we all bombard them with complaints as well, it might wake them up!

Simple School Physics. Melting floating ice (SEA ICE) does not cause the sea level to change AT ALL. An apology should be issued immediately for this alarmist nonsense.

Archimedes is not taking calls right now.

    • October 30, 2023 4:04 pm

      Of course it can’t!
Sea ice is water that has frozen and has 110% of the volume of seawater but an identical mass, therefore it floats.

Actually, based on ice core records, when oceans are warmest, when sea ice is not on the surface of polar oceans, is when ice accumulation on land ice is the most. Sea levels are lowered by evaporation of ocean water and ice accumulation on land. The land ice is always thawing and flowing and returning to the oceans, sea levels rise when sea ice prevents evaporation of ocean and prevents maintenance of land ice.

        “when sea ice prevents evaporation”

But it enables sublimation. So the statement is misleading, at best.

At small sizes, like snow, sublimation is just as fast as evaporation from water.

Och it was all the usual hogwash before & around 6am this morning … went to satellite: the same there but greater choice of other Docus & interest. – even their Weathercams: at least you can actually SEE the weather and read the temps ( if authentic). So that was Talk TV? NO much better than ANY of the other UK stations. Give them ALL the heave. ( sorry ladies! )
Did anyone see the Enemies of People ( FoE) yapping on Lunchtime news, with our roving reporter from the Cromarty Firth : More Drilling Licences again, AND there is quite a High tide today on the back of that N-E wind blowing / funnelling the Moray Firth into the Cromarty Firth & Inverness. Aye Gramps tell us that years ago, coupled to a bittie Autumn rain in the hills, the Local Peffery Burn would be fu’ and there were some big puddles t o jump through when getting in/out of the local Marts – Calf Sales. What’s changed ?

Regrettably I have to report that I cannot sway Mrs J from her belief that when an iceberg melts it increases the water level. If she believes that (and on the face of it it makes apparent sense) it is not surprising that less intelligent people think the same.

Eleven twelfths are under water holding up the other twelfth. They can do that because they are LIGHTER per cubic mile or whatever. Hence

The point surely is that a “calving” glacier will infinitesimally raise sea level though given the size of an iceberg in comparison to the volume of the earth’s oceans such a change is wholly irrelevant.
The volume of the iceberg itself fully accounts for this minuscule increase. Its dispersal by melting in no way adds to the volume of the ocean.

      • It doesn't add up... permalink
        October 30, 2023 10:13 pm

Changes in ocean volume will be about changes in temperature of the ocean. The volume expands as the ocean warms up, but contracts again when that energy is used as the main source to melt the ice, resulting in cooling. Fresh water from melted ice is slightly less dense than sea water, so there is countervailing effect. Additions to floating ice from snowfall will increase the mass and result in sea level rise, but if the snow or rain falls on open ocean the effect is the same. Net effects are probably very hard to calculate.

If you are going to make a number up, might as well make it a big one.

    • October 30, 2023 8:54 pm

It’s clearly a figure derived from the number of Olympic sized swimming pools per head of population, divided by the number of homes supplied by windfarms and multiplied by the length of London buses…..but only in area of Wales’es units over Right Whales testicles volume. Or was it Miami populations divided by Biden budgets or something like that….on the first Thursday of the month when Easter falls in April. Well you know what I mean.

Could be worse, there could be a wind farm to connect to the grid.

Ongoing work to build what will be the single largest wind farm in the world off the north Norfolk coast has been blamed for “destroying” one of the region’s rivers.

Tracing back, I found this article in The Ecologist – formerly edited by Zac Goldsmith

    https://theecologist.org/2023/oct/13/arctic-ice-melt-will-flood-uk-properties

which led me on to find the real culprits – the dunce MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee. Here’s their report:

    https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5803/cmselect/cmenvaud/1141/report.html

    and the list of dunces

    https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/62/environmental-audit-committee/membership/

who unsurprisingly include Chris Skidmore and Caroline Lucas.

A gem from the report (with bolded correction):

It is now predicted that the Arctic could be practically sea ice free during the summer as soon as the 2030s, which is about a decade sooner two decades later than researchers previously predicted.

    Here’s the offending paragraph:

    30. Rising sea levels pose a direct threat to the UK, with up to 1.5 million properties at an increased risk of flooding by 2080.44 Researchers from the University of Lancaster told us that “[s]ea level rise and associated coastal flooding is a major threat to much of the UK as an island nation”.45 Dr Jenny Turton, Senior Adviser at Arctic Frontiers,46 told us that this increase in flooding would in turn lead to enhanced erosion of our coasts, and will require the UK to upgrade the Thames barrier.47

    And those references are:

44 Climate Change Committee, ‘Managing the coast in a changing climate’, October 2018

45 Dr David Parkes (Senior Research Associate at Lancaster University); Dr Jennifer Maddalena (Research Associate at Lancaster University); Dr Jennie Gilbert (Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University); Professor Crispin Halsall (Faculty Director of Natural Sciences at Lancaster University); Dr Amber Leeson (Reader in Glaciology at Lancaster University); Dr Peter Wynn (Reader at Lancaster University) (ARC0017)

46 Arctic Frontiers, located in the Fram Centre, Tromsø, has, since 2007, organised the annual Arctic Frontiers conference, which gathers scientists, businesses, policymakers and representatives of local and Indigenous Peoples for holistic discussions about the future of the Arctic region. Additionally, the organisation hosts year-round activities, including Arctic Frontiers Abroad events, Arctic Frontiers Open events for the public and Arctic Frontiers Young events for the future generation of Arctic leaders between 5–35 years old.

    47 Dr Jenny Turton (ARC0006)

So we find it is really Deben, Piers Forster and chums at the CCC.

    Quelle surprise.

Because the ice is already in the sea.

Think of an ice cube in a glass of water – when you put the ice in, the water level rises.

When it melts, does the level of the water rise again?

In the Arctic circle the majority of ice is sea ice , there is very little land mass there .
So if it all melted it would have no effect on sea level because most of the ice is below sea level , and ice is a lot less dense than water , especially sea water .

‘Join Chris Packham in The Gambia 08 September 2008 – The Gambia Experience – Press Office

For the third consecutive year, TV presenter and photographer Chris Packham will spend a week in the coastal resorts of The Gambia and Senegal as well as an upriver camp, Badi Mayo ( “Chimpanzee Island” ), escorting a group of holidaymakers. During the trip Chris will be using his extensive knowledge of the area and its wildlife, and with a maximum of just twelve participants, there will be plenty of opportunity to get to know the TV presenter and share in his expertise.

Chris has travelled to The Gambia on numerous occasions and says of the country: “It’s a haven for birding, it’s so full of accessible sites and species and it still retains its charm and allure for me after many visits.”

The bird watching tour will run between 13th and 16th February 2009 and costs £350 which can be added to the cost of a holiday at any hotel in the Kotu region. The tour includes welcome drinks with Chris, a trip to the Abuko Nature Reserve, a guided walk of Kotu Stream, and a 2 day birding trip on board a catamaran in the Sine Saloum Delta, Senegal. A 7-night package including flights and bed and breakfast hotel accommodation starts from £688* per person staying at 2+ grade Bakotu Hotel, Chris’ preferred choice. *Departing from Gatwick on Tuesday 10th February.

A two-night extension at a camp five hours upriver at Chimpanzee Island is available between 17th & 19th February, an area described by Chris as “breathtakingly beautiful”. The Chimpanzee Island tour costs £495 per person on top of a flight and coastal hotel package; this includes transport upriver, 2 nights’ twin tented accommodation, full board and a boat trip to view the chimps. A maximum of eight can be accommodated on this part of the trip, providing even greater opportunity to learn from Chris’ lifelong passion for wildlife.

The Gambia Experience offers flights from Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol and East Midlands on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the winter. A Tuesday flight from Glasgow is also available. For more information visit http://www.gambia.co.uk or telephone 0845 330 2087 to order a copy of the 2008/09 brochure featuring the widest range of holidays to The Gambia.’

I suggest that she reads what is put in front of her . Her network depends on the use of news items which are current elsewhere. Look for the owners of news sites and you will see that many are connected.. The writers have been deluded by the analogy that melting glaciers raise lake levels Therefore , they think melting sea ice raises sea levels. The use of logic is not emphasised in colleges which produce these news reporters, false analogies proliferate.
Much as the commenters on web blogs produce false analogies of the backgrounds of news readers , too.
