A 4500-year reconstruction of sea surface temperature variability at decadal time-scales off North Iceland

This paper is 15 years old, and I may have covered it in the deep and distant past (!), but it is still highly relevant:

Below is the key chart:

The age of the core top is 1950 AD, in other words that is the most recent data, though the paper acknowledges it may be slightly older.

But what the clearly shows yet again, is the massive drop in SSTs during the Little Ice Age from the peak about 1000 years ago.

    This just confirms what the latest Greenland 10K year borehole results told us that the coldest period was the Little Ice Age

    Another temperature proxy that shows the mediaeval warm period clearly. The problem is that the IPCC do not dispute this for the northern hemisphere, but instead have used the argument that the GLOBAL temperatures were not warmer during this time, as the southern hemisphere was cooler.
    So what we really need are good proxy temperatures for the southern hemisphere, which I believe are available, but so varied that the IPCC can cherry pick to promote their case. If you can come across some of those, Paul, it would help to find out what the truth really is..

      Catweazle and glenartney: from the first map, take a look at the 2 graphs given for South Africa: one shows the MWP at around 1000AD, the other around 1200AD.
      It is one of the problems as when one tries to take an average for the southern hemisphere the MWP is less obvious. There is enough variation for both sides of the argument to put forward a case.
      From the second list, I looked at a few, and often found that the data were only available to around 1900AD, so difficult to compare to the present. I also like to look at information from the original paper but although references were given, they were not accessible. If indeed they are all shown, regardless of the results they give, there is either a lot of proxies that are not giving a true picture, or, more likely, the warmth of the mediaeval period was not universal. I also noticed that some were recording precipitation rather than temperature, indeed useful but of no help in assessing temperature. But thanks for the links, worth looking at when I can find the time.

    Not seeing ‘warmest for 125,000 years’ on that graph. Coolest for most of the last 4000 years maybe?

      What I see is a great deal of natural variability with no obvious cycles as such and what looks a great deal like a random walk. Exactly what you’d expect from a non-linear, coupled, complex system in fact!

    When you get involved with youngsters, & they in turn react with Grandparents and so on ( shows how well mixed up society is) discussions can really turn fractious ! PolarBears back then in trouble… just checked gone UP 25to 33-1/3rd per cent . So WHY is the bbc doling out this junk today ?

    A glance at the moon shows overlapping bolide impact craters. Alvarez & Alvarez revealed in the 1980s these things involved climate-changing energy conversions. At about that time Petr Beckmann called attention to lack of data on subsea volcanoes such as the recent eruption. But neither of these factors serve as pretext for banning energy everywhere except Red China.
