Temperatures in parts of China hit their lowest levels since records began, state broadcaster said. The provinces affected included Shanxi, Hebei and Liaoning as a cold wave gripped large swathes of the country.

In Heilongjiang’s Yichun, a record low of minus 47.9 C (minus 54.2 F) was recorded in January 1980. This was broken early this week, according to a meteorological forecaster from the area.

China’s president Xi Jinping called for an "all-out" emergency response to the cold snap that began at the start of the week. Snowfall and icy roads along with heavy fog caused multiple accidents on the roads as well.

But the useful idiots in the West still think that China will give up fossil fuels, and rely on wind and solar power to keep them warm!

This was on reuters where it was reported that the Chineses national disaster prevention body issued a directive:
“Storage of thermal coal should be done in advance to ensure the normal power generation of power plants during the critical period,” added the directive.
It also called on local authorities “to ensure that the national energy supply and demand are stable and orderly.”
There was no directive to store wind or solar power.

Texas learnt the harsh lesson that relying on a gas supply system powered by the grid that failed when the windmills froze is not a good substitute for a pile of coal and a digger.

It would be interesting to know when their records began.

Slightly off topic but a friend of mine who is a signalling shift manager for Network Rail phone me last evening to let me know that the DoT have, for the first time ever, instructed NR to carry out a series of National Grid collapse simulations using a few different scenarios. You have been warned!

Also unusually far south apparently. Chinese weather forecasters got it wrong.

BEIJING, Dec 18 (Reuters) – The cold weather sweeping China brought rare snowfall on Monday as far south as the province of Guangdong, while temperatures in the chilly north plunged to near historic lows for the month.

In a week of unexpectedly frigid weather, temperatures have fallen to lows below zero in northern areas, disrupting road, rail and air transport and even causing a brake failure in a commuter train in Beijing, the capital.

Forecasters early in November had predicted a warmer winter this year due to the El Nino phenomenon, while warning that temperatures could fluctuate after one of the warmest Octobers in decades.

Love the juxtaposition of this story with the one from Scotland claiming it is too hot there. More especially when the land mass of Scotland is compared to that of China. Talk a out the Scots bring parochial….

‘Ever’ is a long time. Sad to see it being used in the ‘coldest’ context.
