UK Health Security Agency boss criticised for tropical disease claims

I’m pleased to see that Paul Reiter has now joined the attack on Jenny Harries’ error strewn claims about the Asian tiger mosquito.

Everything he says backs up my earlier post:

.

London, 18 December: A leading expert in mosquito-borne diseases is fiercely critical of Professor Dame Jenny Harries, head of the UK Health Security Agency, calling her recent pronouncements on mosquito-transmitted diseases “entirely fictional” and “shameless”.

Professor Harries was quoted in the media as saying that rising temperatures will make such diseases common in the UK by 2040 because the Asian Tiger Mosquito – which can transmit dengue, chikungunya, zika, yellow fever and other viral diseases – will become established throughout Britain. Dengue will eventually become endemic in London, it is claimed.

But Professor Paul Reiter, retired professor of Insects and Infectious Diseases at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, and a leading specialist in this field, has ridiculed her claims:

“The natural range of the Tiger mosquito, an Asian species, extends from the tropics to regions where mean January temperatures are around minus ten degrees Celsius. Northern strains are able to survive because in late summer, as days grow shorter, the eggs they lay are dormant and remain unhatched until spring arrives”.

Since the late 1970s, there has been rapid global spread of the Tiger mosquito, to the United States, Latin America, Europe and several African countries, probably mainly via the global trade in used tyres. Professor Reiter says that it is beyond doubt that this has nothing to do with temperature.

Professor Reiter has also lambasted fearmongering about the return of malaria, noting that this was once a major cause of death in many parts of England, even during the period that climatologists call the Little Ice Age:

"Shakespeare mentions malaria – “the ague” – thirteen times, so it was clearly once common here. The disease began to decline – for a multitude of reasons – in the mid-nineteenth century, despite the upward trend in global temperatures."

Net Zero Watch director Andrew Montford said:

"This is not the first time we have seen the Civil Service misleading the public in this way. Science is being misused to generate fear and to “nudge” us in a desired direction. This kind of shameful disinformation brings the Civil Service into disrepute."

I never knew there was a global trade in used tyres.

If there is such, I think they would go from the “first world” too the 3rd.

Caused AFAIK by the Japanese government assisting the tyre industry by mandating an unreasonable minimum tread depth, meaning tyres are removed while there is still plenty of life left in them.
There are similar laws concerning vehicles too, second hand Japanese imports are remarkably good value for money.

There’s a car dealer in Burton upon Trent that imports used Japanese vehicles. Mainly big luxury 7/8 sweaters.
After a comment on a previous tread I checked what they offer. Pretty comprehensive mostly 3rd party 5 Year warranty, 3 year breakdown, MOT, Service, underseal, mph speedo, etc

I’m not in the market for something like that but I assume what they offer isn’t unusual.

My wife has had two Nissans, a Serena and an Elgrand.
both practically indistinguishable from new, and very reasonably priced.
If you’re in the market for such a vehicle, I can thoroughly recommend one.

    Learn something every day.
A rather more important thing to learn is that the Civil Service “Experts”, hand picked to suit the authoritarian politicians’ narrative, know nothing and are determined never to learn.

Harries has form. Witness the debacle over masks. She deserves to be a Dame about as much as Dame Alison Rose.

I feel sorry for those people who have earned their honour as opposed to the recent scum such as Cameron, Blair, Callanan, Mone, Mandelson etc

How ironic that the demise of malaria in this country (and more likely the USA – eh, GC?) is the draining of the swamp.

Beware the ides of March…. Yesyes, I ‘ve read “all about them … puh, Dunno where I was (with my thoughts) when we did Trembling Sword… probably cursing the wind blowing empty seed & fertiliser bags around at home, out in the fields. Cold winds from the east in March – grand & Healthy BUT come to BITE. So this nonsense ir once again designed to prime us for another Pandemic, or THE Millennium Bug …. BUG – Millennium, ….. but people laughed.
and now despite the great covid enquiry, a Scot’s lassie ( bonnie even?) is being pursued for ££££s … maybe we should be cracking down on this scaremongering nonsense and the GRIEF it has all caused us recently. What Spray can have we in our arsenal? Brings back memories of the beginning of this book I’m trying to read “How the Scots invented the modern world”

Tyres need to transition to wood frames and steel rims.
Stop used tyres – stop mosquitoes.

When you find one ,find a cartwright…. you cannot put cartwheels on an automobile .
Get a horse for your sleigh too 🙂

      Have a Merry Christmas .

‘Science’ has been appropriated by the communists. They use the word because focus groups tell them people respect it. Communists have no idea what it means; it’s just a word to trick people into giving up their freedom.

Dominic Cummings was an extreme example, he made it worse by thinking that he did understand what he fetishized.

O/T The office of the Prime Minster is sending out Eco BS survey
And we know surveys are not really about OBTAINING opinions, but SHAPING opinions.

It begins “Nothing is more important than our shared future
    : growing our economy,
    reaching Net Zero,
and protecting our environment for generations to come”

… The back side of the 2 page intro
    has 3 photos
    – Reaching Net Zero by 2050
    – Smartmeter : Helping families switch to more energy efficient homes
    – Ending the ban on onshore wind farms
(FFS that is a total lie. There has never been a ban.)

    • December 18, 2023 6:51 pm

      The survey sheet has categories
      – Growing our Economy
      – Reaching Net Zero by 2050
      – Protecting Green Spaces
      – Investing In Renewables
      – Building A Brighter Future
      – About You
The first 3 pages mention “Net Zero” eleven times
      page 4 doesn’t.

      • December 18, 2023 6:54 pm

Its a 2 page intro, and 2 page survey ..4 pages total.

It’s such childish garbage. Of course “the future” is what matters, because that’s all we have. But future generations will be far wealthier than we are (or ought to be) and have much better technologies than us. As for preserving stuff for them, who knows what they will want or value? Shifting backwards to inefficient and low productivity technologies will not help people in the future.

‘Ought to be’ is the point, I really think this lot are going to bring it all crashing down (or put CCP in charge which is the same thing really).

But in the West – or any country that is obsessed with Net Zero – peak wealth has already past as we are no being over-taxed to pay subsidies for all the useless green crap and will never get the lost money back.

As so often, Shakespeare, that uber-skeptic,, knew the score:

And mountainous error be too highly heap’d
      for truth to o’peer.

It’s quite remarkable that there’s literally nothing about small changes in our climate that will make life better for anybody. Which is why we know its all rubbish.

  11. December 19, 2023 10:33 am

Of course this was shamelessly promoted by the usual suspects at the BBC and their wokistas in crime at the Grauniad. Where is the apology? Also I see a pattern here. People in prominent positions with science qualifications are being fed climate propaganda to spout which is outwith their knowledge base so WHYT are they spouting this crap. Clearly it is their speech writers/ support staff coming up with this garbage. This is the so frequently used trojan horse using an “expert” to spout climate propaganda interlaced with their own field of expertise. The word weasels are excelling themselves.
