Tom’s Facebook Spat
By Paul Homewood

This is an eminently readable account from author Thomas Hocknell:
Unless you’re an Eskimo or Russian, winter is a difficult period for most people. Even the sun is low, scraping the horizon from east to west with little resolve. In the UK winter is spent trussed up like a turkey in twenty layers of clothing while stuck on trains heated to slow cook temperatures. It’s easy to see why bears choose to sleep through it; or at least avoid trains. Winter confirms why it’s a colder planet, not a warmer one, that poses a greater risk to mankind. Roughly twice as many people die of cold each year than heat (CDC National Centre for Health Statistics). This is rather awkward for the Net Zero hysterics singing the climate crisis hymn while sticking fingers in their ears at their increasingly erroneous modelling. The answer to the question ‘climate crisis or climate scam?’ depends generally upon whether the respondent has been a delegate at the WEF or COP, or not.

An excellent, easily readable and humorous article. I have been calling it a scam for longer than I can remember (well for at least 15 years).
O/T ITV viewers slam ‘woke’ messages during the National Lottery’s New Year’s Eve Big Bash:
‘Wealthy celebs lecturing us on climate change’
At least we can see who’s on the #ClimateScam payroll

I wonder how much Jo is paid for her non-job? Could she do something that benefits the country or is she another useless university product best suited to stacking shelves?
gezza, I will have you know that shelf stacking is such a complex function that there is a foundation degree course in it…how ironic!

It’s part of a political agenda to enslave us all:
“In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that
pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like
would fit the bill… All these dangers are proposed to be caused by human intervention and it is only through changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself,” – King admitted that the “threat of global warming” was merely a ploy to justify an attack on “humanity itself.” This is now is being rolled out as the Great Reset/New World Order and Net Zero Carbon by 2050 ruse.
~ Dr Alexander King – Co-founder of the Club of Rome, Author “The First Global Revolution”
“The goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism. This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” – it never was about climate change.
~ Christiana Figueres – Executive Secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change
“to enslave us all”
I think their perspective is ending freedom. One can have little freedom but still not be a slave. See: Soviet Union.
Many Americans are fully onboard with government reducing freedoms. Some even think they are conservatives because they are against certain reductions, not realizing that accepting government power to reduce freedom isn’t conservative at all.
This is a serious problem because the diaspora from California bring their belief in unlimited government power to other states. Their outlook is fascist, but they believe they are conservative.
Yes, this is certainly fascism since the corporates are in on it as opposed to communism. Quite how these global fascists believe they will be able to carry on if they destroy the lives of the people who make them rich – no money, no iphone, no Facebook account etc – or provide the means to live their elite lives – no oil industry, no jet fuel, no lubricants etc. I suppose they don’t actually know what makes their possible – they may be rich but not necessarily very bright.
Decadence. They attack that which keeps them alive.
GC– I agree with you re the “Californian dispora”. A few years I knew nothing of this but then I had a very interesting bar discussion in Flagstaff (AZ). Apparently Californian State interventions, taxes, etc had forced some Californios to live in cheaper, better administered States, such as AZ, but then they immediately sought to reinvent all the CA State rules in their new homestates.
Of course, the likes of flood, famine and water-shortages are actually caused by LACK of human intervention. EG: the small river at the bottom of my garden feeds into the Avon and regularly tops the bank and floods my garden. The EA are in thrall to the likes of Natural England so when I complained that the river was choking with weeds, reeds and tree branches the response was that it was fine as this helps slow the river down holding back flood-water downstream. Slaps forehead!!!
Poor water course management but what would you expect from the Environment Agency that had Labour’s Chris Smith, a spitting image puppet in real life form, as their chairman for 6 years. There is something in controlling the speed that water makes its way down a watercourse – if you carry out works that moves water down faster you may well create a flood problem further down. I believe the Thames flood a few years back was caused by works doing just this. However, if they have decided to use your garden to store floodwater they should have asked first. Sensible competent management would identify such places but not arable fields that have autumn planting.

Nothing new.
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”
H L Mencken
From the Substack article:
“It’s time these ‘experts’ are more thoroughly examined as to their motivations behind their pursuit of unravelling western civilisation.”
Enter stage left, one Jim Dale, a regular guest on GBNews on whom I have just posted a comment on WUWT which I shall repeat here:
“I looked into Jim Dale’s qualifications and can’t find any.
I have searched his linkedin profile, his website, numerous other sites where he promotes himself and I can’t find a single academic qualification mentioned.
What academic goes through life without ever listing his qualifications? I haven’t met any.
He claims to have trained in the Royal Navy, which he appears to have been in for 8 years. No mention of rank. Again, no officer I have met in, or retired from the RN is shy about documenting his rank.
It must be presumed, therefore, that Dale joined as a rating. Without a suitable qualification he wouldn’t be accepted directly onto any officer training programs.
He claims to have spent time in the Meteorological dept. of the RN, presumably having gone through basic training. It’s unlikely he was then instantly handed a cushy desk job straight out of basic training so his time there would have been limited.
As far as I can tell Dale is a shameless self promoter with no scientific, or any academic qualifications whatsoever.”
This is relevant only if you are a sucker for appeals to authority*. The problem is what Dale says, not who he is or was.
*The grandest appeal to authority is peer review.
A classic university qualification in Physics, Maths etc. is not an appeal to authority, it is a requirement to present oneself as an ‘expert’ and speak knowledgeably on an extraordinarily complicated subject.
Were I Jim Dale I might claim, as an ex copper, to be a lawyer. Thankfully, for the less well informed public, qualifications get in the way of me doing that.
BBC has ‘experts.’ How’s that working out for you?
@Gamecock
Name me a BBC ‘expert’ with a classic degree. No, not a degree in the classics.
Just saw a video of a strange female person saying she was not going to dignify a question with a response… by going on to not answer it in a most undignified way not answering it but trying to question the qualifications of the person posing it. Given she appears a very popular ‘source’ for most in the media to invite on, this struck me as odd as almost all in the media, especially in the carbon cult sector, are far less qualified than the person she directed this at.
Zoe Cohen “… You have no climate science credentials whatsoever”
@jameswoudhuysen “.. I have a physics degree .. don’t patronise me”
Thank you, Stew… that’s the one.
MSM shows, tv, radio… continually wheel out these strange individuals and I can only presume it’s for ratings, as the fallout from their nonsense descends quickly into a lot of heat and little light.
If so, it offers nothing, and gives no one, any good at all. Especially the broadcasters. The arrogance of ‘qualifications’ is such a red herring anyway, as it is clear once respected honorifics are now doled out like candy to anyone toeing a line.
It seems unlikely the guys I am privileged to work with, many not with a B…S… to their name would be convinced by her efforts, but maybe the Justins, Kays and Emmas of this world feel comfier with someone from the BA Oxbridge industry slightly less dim than they are.
Certainly those with a PPE. Ed.
For some reason they had the ignorant Dale on the talk about the Japanese earthquake. Still as he has no meteorology qualifications why would nothing in seismology be a problem. I can’t tell you what he said as I quickly hit the mute button – they also indulge some speccy Irish bloke who spouts Net Zero type drivel. Dale runs a ‘climate change’ consultancy and so makes money out of the global warming scam. Such a shame that GB News can’t find an independent person to comment as opposed to somebody with a dog in the fight.
Dale’s company website writes
after qualifying as a meteorological observer at the Royal Navy’s School of Meteorology & Oceanography. He served as a meteorologist in the Fleet Air Arm
The full stop is in the wrong place
and the next sentence has a similar grammatical error.
Interesting that he employs his son, a Thai lady and the JOHN KETTLEY.
That was one site I perused to understand if he had a qualification.
I have no idea what a meteorological observer is, does anyone else?
It seems he jumped straight from being a meteorological observer in the RN to a meteorologist in the Fleet Air Arm, and did his basic training, and deployment, as a rating, all within 8 years in the RN. Remarkable feat of progression.
Yet still I cannot find a single higher educational qualification mentioned anywhere.
I just wish someone on GBNews would interrogate him about his qualifications.
Unqualified skeptics have PROVED some alarmist papers by well qualified people to be wrong .. that highlights the fallacy of argument from authority
However you’d think a TV company would look for an authority base to start off with.
eg If you are talking about an ancient text, it’s better to use someone who speaks Chinese etc.
It is interesting that Dale on Twitter is fond of sneering at other people “where’s your qualifications ?”
Yesterday Dale led a thread where people piled in and sneered at James Woudhuysen for ON:Y having a physics degree … seemingly unaware Dale is no academic
.. https://twitter.com/BritWeatherSvs/status/1742192031017955831
Perhaps somone should have asked Dale to produce his qualifications.
I would but I’m Twitter banned.
Now searching to see if someone has
Under the term “qualified” he keeps telling people they are not qualified
He made this claim ” I’ve been a qualified meteorologist for almost 40 years & don’t take bungs from the fossil fuel industry.”
It’s interesting that in this CV he doesn’t call himself a meteorologist
“Official Qualifications: Meteorological Observer …”
“I gained my meteorological observer qualification in the Fleet Air Arm served .. until late 1985 – observing, plotting and providing meteorological data & forecasts for aircrews”
“I then served for 2.5 years as a meteorological consultant at marine firm ..
observing, plotting and forecasting the weather globally, for the media and other recipients.”
https://newa.expert/expert-members/mr-jim-n-r-dale/
I have.
I guess more to the point, what official academic body ‘awarded’ the certification? I don’t see any, and don’t think the Royal Navy is one. Did he just self-certify?
Dale also says in his bio: “I am perceived as being very knowledgeable within my industry”, but by whom? Perception can be very misleading and inaccurate.
But I think his biggest problem is that he seems to directly equate short term (i.e. daily) weather with long term climate, when the two are worlds apart.
As far as I can make out Stew, the Royal Naval School of Meteorology and Oceanography was in Helston Cornwall at the time Dale would have attended. It offered a 6 month training course in meteorology with a further 3 months oceanography.
That certainly could not be described as level 6 degree standard and sounds more like training in how to use instrumentation etc.
I would not normally put someone down for that level of practical experience but I do find it rather a stretch for him to claim expertise in complex science off the back of just that.
His own LinkedIn says “Meteorological Observer 1978 – 1985 · 7 yrs”
Yet an expert consultancy page
says “Expert obtained his qualifications as a meteorological observer qualification in the British Royal Navy in 1982” that makes sense cos he would have had to serve basic navy time first
You folks are trapped in an ad hominem fallacy.
Attack what Dale says. Attacking his qualifications has FA to do with what he said. Discussing his qualifications in no way refutes what he said.
When Dale presents himself as a meteorologist but has no qualifications it’s quite in order to ask questions about him.
All we can establish is that he was a meteorological observer in the RN for perhaps two or three years. As Ray Saunders points out “It [RN] offered a 6 month training course in meteorology with a further 3 months oceanography.” at the time of Dales service in the RN. This is not the standard of qualification we expect from a man invited to discuss, potentially, the most important event in modern mankind’s history.
GBNews is inviting someone on to national television and they have not established his credentials, as far as we are aware.
I was a copper for years but I can’t wander round telling everyone I’m a Lawyer. Not only is it misleading, it’s dishonest and being paid on that basis is potentially fraudulent.
Stop with the elitist sophistry. He is free to speak on any subject he wants to. He can call himself anything he wants to.
Is this a British thing? Does one need “qualifications” to speak? Here in America, anyone can speak on any subject they want to. They can can even be WRONG.
@Gamecock
He’s entitled to speak on any subject he wants, but not whilst misrepresenting himself as something he’s not.
There is nothing elitist about it.
How about you visit a supposedly qualified financial advisor who turned out to by lying about those qualifications and you lost money?
Americans would be the first ones to drag him into court and sue the shirt off him. Is that elitist?
“He’s entitled to speak on any subject he wants, but not whilst misrepresenting himself as something he’s not.”
So you think meteorologists should have the same professional protections as doctors and cops.
“What are you in for?”
“Impersonating a meteorologist.”
One wonders what qualifications one needs to read a script?
Me·te·or·ol·o·gist
/ˌmēdēəˈräləjəst/
noun
1. an expert in or student of meteorology; a weather forecaster: “meteorologists predict rain for the rest of the week”
A weather forecaster. His employer decides if he has necessary qualifications.
“One wonders what qualifications one needs to read a script?”
Posing this to a Kay Burley or Marianna Spring could lead down an interesting path.
@Gamecock
Meteorologist
Alternative titles for this job include Weather forecaster, weather scientist
Meteorologists collect and study data from the atmosphere and oceans to make weather forecasts and carry out research.
“So you think meteorologists should have the same professional protections as doctors and cops.
Being that the climate debate is probably the most controversial and possibly the single most important subject of the contemporary era, yes. I would say that deliberately presenting oneself as something you are not should invoke serious sanction.
It is considered professional malpractice for scientists to alter data, misrepresent facts, plagiarise, and practice numerous other questionable conducts, for which they can be stripped of their professional qualifications. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientific_misconduct_incidents
In some cases perpetrators were criminally convicted.
By your standards, anyone could pass themselves off as a doctor, and some do, conducting back street abortions.
How do you believe they should be dealt with? The same way you believe Dale should be dealt with, just let him continue to deceive the public?
I loved the bit where Tom asks his female friend from CISLXYZ how much CO2 is manmade and how much is natural. You’d think that given her position she would be able to answer that directly yet she had to ask, of all people, David King!! And then didn’t answer the question.
Is King not the numpty who tried to tell the organisers of a Russian climate conference what they could talk about? I suspect he learnt the Russian for f*ck off.

Climate Change strikes again in Greta’s homeland.
Finland, Sweden set this winter’s cold records as temperature plummets to over minus 40 Celsius
Finland and Sweden have recorded the coldest temperatures this winter as thermometers plummeted to minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit) as a result of a cold spell prevailing in the Nordic region
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/sweden-ap-svt-finland-nordic-b2472116.html
Watched the Channel 5 programme on the winter of 1947 last night. The weather woman claimed the primary causes of the onset at the end of January was a prolonged period of extreme cold over Finland and Sweden.
So that’s where my winter season went to. Next week, can we switch?
So anything published that contradicts their fantasy is funded by ‘Big Oil’ although no evidence is ever provided to prove this allegation, while it is fine that they are funded by greenie billionaires who make a fortune out of the scam?
‘Big Oil’ generally means to JSO etc companies like BP, Conoco Philips, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell and Total Energies. They don’t understand that these companies hold less than 13% of oil and gas production and reserves. The National oil companies, mostly located in the Middle East – Saudi Aramco, National Iranian Oil Co., Kuwait Petroleum Co, Abu Dhabi NOC etc – account for more than half of global oil production and 60% of world oil and gas reserves.
Never seen JSO etc protesting against any of these latter producers – I wonder why? 🙂
All info from IEA ‘The Oil and Gas Industry in Net Zero Transitions’ (Nov. 2023)
And about 80% of the world’s coal is mined by state owned coal businesses in Asia!
The author i=has published a long winded science free data free diatribe criticizing climate alarmists
H makes it clear he knows nothing about climate science and includes no data to refute climate scaremongering except cleverly worded ridicule
This article is completely worthless and that’s what you get on Januar y when there are very few climate and energy articles published.
The author implies he is a CO2 denier and has no idea CO2 can be a climate change feedback and a climate change forcing at the same time. I
I’d bee he has no idea what a climate feedback or forcing is
The author falsely claims:
“there are plenty of scientists who disagree with manmade climate change”
The author is lying.
In 26 years of climate science reading I have NEVER found an author who was a scientist and claims humans had zero effect on the climate. Not one. I have found three crackpot scientists who claim humans only have a very small effect on the climate because they falsely claim only 3% of atmospsheric CO2 is manmade. the right percentage is about 33%
Paul Homewood could write a better article than this one in his sleep. it is very disturbing that he believes this is a good article
The multiple insults of leftists may be fun to read but the author does not even try to prove the predictions of a manmade climate crisis is a scam.
The predictions of global warming doom are wild guess, data free, wrong since 1979, climate astrology. You can refute the predictions of climate doom for those reasons without insulting or ridiculing the believers, They are like religious people with beliefs based on faith in long term predictions. Thei beliefs were not based on facts, data and logic, so are very hard to change with facts ,data and logic. But they have 50 years of wrong climate predictions and that is our bet weapon to refute their continuing climate predictions.
Richard Greene (BS, MBA, TBW)

Yawn!!!
Seconded.
The single most boring man on the internet.
Richard Greene (BS, MBA, TBW) – I could not give a flying bonk for your qualifications – why do you bother to print them? If you think that they should impress anyone you are seriously mistaken.
He has also never heard of proof-reading. Rarely have I read a comment on here with so many typos.
“there are plenty of scientists who disagree with manmade climate change”
The author is lying.
In 26 years of climate science reading I have NEVER found an author who was a scientist and claims humans had *zero effect* on the climate.
That is the strawman fallacy The theory of manmade Climate Change is that there is dangerous levels of warming MOSTLY caused by manmade CO2
People who say there is warming due to urban heat island effect and increasing population etc. but that they are not overly concerned about manmade CO2
.. are not included in that definition.
” They are like religious people with beliefs based on faith in long term predictions.”
References to “like a religion” and “faith” are becoming more widespread
Oh dear, I’m sorry that you are so poorly read Richard; that you havent read Prof Bob Carter, Prof Ian Plimer, Prof William Happer, Prof John Clusner, Dr Willie Soon, Dr Jo-anne Nova, Dr Tim Ball, Prof Valentina Zarcova and the thousands of other eminent scientists (mainly physicists) who show that man has an irrelevantly minute impact on global climate. While I agree this article was journalistic in style, it was not written as a science paper. It was written to alert people like you to open their eyes and go do some research and reading.
GB News is saying that the Met Orifice has ‘provisionally’ declared least year to be the second warmest year since records began in 1884. What? A year of ‘global boiling’ is only the SECOND warmest? No doubt there is some lying going on here if they remain true to their eco-activist role.
Great article! Thanks for posting it. Happy 2024.
Great thoughts and great one liners from Tom. Something I’ve noticed recently is that the phase “settled science” seems to be, thankfully, disappearing from climate crisis discourse. I wish the pseudoscience that goes with it was as well. As you know, and many of your readers will know, science is a process, not a set of facts, the object of which is to falsify a hypothesis. If you can’t falsify it then, perhaps, you have discovered an objective truth. Although its likely someone smarter will come along later and prove you were wrong! All the best for 2024.
I believe in man made warming coz my friends all vote liberal and stuff and David King who isn’t anything to do with or knows about atmospheric physics but he lies fantastically well.
time to do my make up
bye ee.
Excellent paper. Reminds me that I posted a while ago that a former school teacher of mine, one S M Houghton was a dedicated Methodist (Plymouth Brethren) and raised his twoisons in that belief. One of them became Sir John Houghton, head of the Met Office, founder member of the IPCC and lead editor of the First Assessment Report. It is on record that he firmly believed that Global Warming was sent by God to remingd is to mend our ways.
Apologies Vernon, at first I genuinely thought you were taking the piss. So I did a bit of research on Sir John Houghton and he really was a complete religious nutjob. If ever we needed proof of the BS going on, he was it.
Ray: Thanks for the (rare) acknowledgement. Sydney Maurice Houghton amassed the largest collection of religious works, many original, in private hands in the world – over 30,000 volumes. One of his publications “My Life In Books” inspired me to write my own autobiography. Not surprising that his son was inspired to invent “global warming”.
In the UK 10x as many people die of cold rather than heat. 2 to 1 is the worldwide figure, including all the hot countries. Winter is a killer.
