Electric bikes, seen as a solution for tackling climate change, have caused a record number of fires in New York City.

According to figures released by the New York Fire Department to Fox News, e-bikes – powered by lithium-ion batteries – were responsible for 267 fires in the city.

They claimed 18 lives and caused 150 injuries, with fatalities increasing 200 per cent in 2023.

The latest figures show that sales of e-bikes in the US increased by 269 per cent between 2019 and 2022. It is estimated that the market was worth $2.59 (£2bn) billion by the end of 2023.

They have been seen as a way of decarbonising the US and Democratic members of Congress have sponsored legislation which would subsidise their purchase.

Being responsible for 267 fires in the city, aren’t they in fact increasing ‘carbon’ emissions?

You make a good point. Toxic emissions at that.

Has anyone calculated the emissions from the bus fire in Wimbledon and compared them with the projected saving in particulate emissions in the new ULEZ area?

Yes, That Man but, as with Drax they are good, sustainable carbon emissions so they avoid being accounted for. In fact, once you subtract the CO2 emissions avoided by the bikes NOT using any more non-renewably generated electricity after being burnt, they actually have NEGATIVE carbon emissions. 👍
      All makes sense, doesn’t it?

It makes sense just like having China make pig iron from iron ore, then turn that into steel – I presume we will import the high spec steels from somewhere that can be trusted not to fake Certificates of Conformity – then ship it by sea to the UK while all the thousands made redundant here watch from the cliffs will cut global CO2 emissions.

There is far more than just the steelworkers being made redundant. The importation of iron ore will cease so those docks can close down. The Cumbrian coal mine will be abandoned again as championed by their LimpDumb MP as the UK won’t need cokeing coal and Greta forbid that we could actually export it – as we would have done anyway – to make some money for UK plc.

A bit off topic , but the Advertising standards people have at last started complaining about EVs being advertised with maximum possible range claims instead of the actual range they will really do .

When will they do anything about the ” 100% renewable energy supplied” Lies .

Sadly on both cases I think they are covered. In the on screeen small print there is a statement saying that the range comes from a standard test that exists as a comparator across models. No different to that for normal cars where some idiots got very excited that in everyday use they did not achieve those test figures. There could be a case for making the writing a lot bigger or requiring a statement to that effect. And the 100% lie is underpinned by the REGOs scam that allows them to make claims that don’t withstand a second’s scrutiny.

“And the 100% lie is underpinned by the REGOs scam that allows them to make claims that don’t withstand a second’s scrutiny.”

Even with the REGOs scam I can’t see how they get around the Advertising Standards Authority rules

        https://www.asa.org.uk/type/non_broadcast/code_section/03.html

        “3.8
Claims for the content of non-fiction publications should not exaggerate the value, accuracy, scientific validity or practical usefulness of the product. Marketers must ensure that claims that have not been independently substantiated but are based merely on the content of a publication do not mislead consumers.”

How many consumers (particularly in the public sector & virtue signally by businesses particularly supermarkets & food production) buy 100% renewable energy tariffs believing their electricity is 100% renewable instead that it an investment scheme to support renewables – with current technology it would not be that difficult to require real time or the at the very least 30 minute matching with smart meters (although it would still be a legal fiction as your electricity comes from the nearest generator) it would highlight the work needed to improve the practical usefulness of the product e.g. storage or even get people to considering supporting alternatives e.g nuclear which in practice would be more reliable and cheaper.

Even people in the renewables sector think REGOS are misleading

‘Electric bikes, seen as a solution for tackling climate change, have caused a record number of fires in New York City.’

    What was the previous record?

‘Solution for tackling?’ What does that even mean?

“Everybody buy an e-bike, and we’ll be good.”

‘Democratic members of Congress have sponsored legislation which would subsidise their purchase.’

So it must be a really, really good idea.

Battery powered bicycles and the wretched scooters are seen by the morons as a way of stopping people having to use cars and can’t be bothered to pedal. Yes, it does rather undermine their cycle to keep fit campaigns and did not account for how useful these things would be for committing street crime given that in London you can legally use them to go down escape routes that are banned for mopeds and motorcycles. Would a person who was not mentally challenged think all this was a good idea? No, but the people I used to work with included a section leader who saw no problem in delivering casks and kegs of beer to pubs and bars in the City of London using a cargo bicycle. Nuff said.

There was one in Adelaide yesterday (22). Fortunately only the house was destroyed. Great work by the fire brigade who saved adjoining (separated) houses and went into the firey house (with breathing apparatus).

What is wrong with using a regular bike? This seems to be just a net increase in energy demand. Nobody replaced car travel with an e-bike, they replace bike or walking with e-bike. The actual need for these virtue signaling toys is very small.

Good point, well said Dreher. Its all about conditioning people. It seems the young and fit buy into this scam far more that the old, frail and those that live atop a hill. Strange.
