Claims Of Wettest Winter Are Fake

March 4, 2024

By Paul Homewood

I have come across suggestions that this winter has been the wettest on record. One claim in particular came on GB News on Saturday from Donnachadh McCarthy, the extremist environmentalist, who is often allowed to get away unchallenged with blatant incorrect statements. His claim, he said, came from Met Office data.

He was lying, because it was a long way from being the wettest winter.

He did not say which region he was talking about, but in the UK as a whole, it was only 8th wettest, in England the 6th and in Wales the 8th wettest. (The show discussed the Welsh Govt’s decision to rewild/reforest 20% of farmland ):

Mention was made by McCarthy of a rainfall series going back to the 18thC, so presumably he was talking of the England & Wales series, which also shows 2023/24 as being the 6th wettest:

It is frustrating how extremists such as McCarthy and Jim Dale not only get so much airtime, but are also allowed to get away with blatant mistruths.

Surely, a complaint to Ofcom would be worth a try? 😂😂

McCarthy and Dale are both extremely irritating and often spout misleading claims. However, he could have said that the rainfall trend is upward and the trendline is at its highest in 200 years.

Where’s the evidence there is a trend? Random walks an often show “trends” but they are still actually random.

      ‘often’

That’s being generous to the pair. ‘Always’ is the word that springs to my mind.

I don’t like calling people out, i prefer to listen to a arguement from a knowledgeable person but Donnachadh McCarthy – climatologist? He studied Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology at the National University of Ireland. Then became a ballet dancer then started XR. He also said last November “Tax the rich as they are causing the planet’s destruction” GBNews December 2023

He’s not a climatologist, not a meteorologist, not a climate activiast – hes a marxist.

I’m not even sure he’s a Marxist. Like so many on the Leftish side of things these days, he just seems to be somebody who thinks his largely ignorant opinions based mostly on his emotions are somehow god-like pronouncements of Truth. I doubt if he’s every read a book on Economics, Marx or otherwise, nor one one on political philosophy.

If the information comes from XR, trust it at your own peril.

Off topic but would appreciate feedback from number-crunchers, or a separate post. Reform have published a sort of draft manifesto. They are talking about £30bn savings over five years from scrapping net zero. Seems a bit low?

They are planning to waste a lot of money nationalising large chunks of the energy sector. So allowing for that, the savings would be a lot less than they should be: nationalised industry has never been good at cost cutting, and the cost of nationalisation comes off the top.

Absolutely agree nationalisation would be the wrong way to go. Invisible hands know best. But I am not seeing a reference in the “contract”. (Although it is quite hard to read – may have missed it). Elsewhere they talk about scrapping quangoes and getting government out of the way. You can write and tell them:

The link looked to me like saving £30 billion per year. But who knows?

      • March 5, 2024 7:59 am

Thank you. Yes, £30bn a year annualised over five year parliament. A billion here, s billion there…some beans.

Well done to Paul for being able to stomach listening to the leprechaun but when I saw him he was being opposed by the excellent Paul Burgess.

The Met Office did its usual trick of finding somewhere that was wettest:

“It was also a wetter than average month, with the south of England experiencing its wettest February since the series began in 1836.”

The more you subdivide the more bites you get at finding a “record”

    Paul

What was the programme and who was on air to add balance to these statements please.

It seem GB News have gone full MSM as they prepare to seek new jobs following GB News’ failure, given the end of Talk TV, perhaps?

I feel it necessary to make the obvious point tat UK Weather has nothing to do with global climate change, itself a tiny change in the geological recorded range of even the recent past, and that is the basis for net zero, nothing remotely connectable by science with UK weather, for massively dominant reasons you know.

These are the wrong arguments to be having. Global change and the net effects of it are the reality…… and tgere is nothing to see.

These people are pantomime fools, who do not understand the most basic principles.

But why not debunk the already irrelevant claims if you can?

Will ypu be at Martin Durkin’s premier tomorrow ?:-)

It was the Nana Akua show on March 2nd on GB News.

Paul Burgess was the other guest, but had no way to check the figures at the time. I’ve let Paul know, so he can raise it. But if you have a way to get through to the producer, I would like to push this harder. Quite simply McCarthy should not be invited on any more GBN programmes, given his proven lies.

The programme segemnt is on YouTube here:
