EV Drivers Moan That They Don’t Pay As Much Tax As Petrol Car Drivers
By Paul Homewood

Where on earth do they get these dopey environmental reporters from? Nursery School?
This is the Express’ version of Emma Gatten:

The real question, dopey Steph, is why are “unfair fuel duties”, paid for by petrol/diesel car drivers costing £1000 a year, when EV drivers don’t pay a penny?
FOOTNOTE
One intelligent commenter noted:
An average diesel probably costs between £1500 and £1700 pa in fuel, which includes both VAT and fuel duty.
Dopey Steph’s calculation suggests that EV drivers, with no off street parking, are already paying more, even without paying about £700 a year in the equivalent of fuel duties, a tax that will inevitable come their way eventually.

I genuinely doubt Steph Spyro can count up to 10. Why is it that “Environment” reporters never have even the tiniest vestige of an appropriate qualification? I find their arrogance in opining about subjects they know sweet FA about quite staggeringly
Their skill (supposdly) is journalism, the ability to write well and distill what is important in to a coherent article.
I think that rules most of them out then.
yes, you also wonder whether the Treasury boffins have told ministers there’ll be £39 billion plus black hole in the Government’s income sheet if cars are all electric by 2030.
It’s the virtue signalling class who don’t want to pay 20% – the terraced classes just can’t afford an EV.
Very true!
The government’s plan is to bankrupt the middle-class, not the wealthy.
Bankrupt the middle class and you bankrupt the wealthy – how much is Amazon or Apple stock worth if sales fall by 60-70%?
Few pre-industrial societies had a middle-class. Which is how they want it now.
I have said all along that that these billionaires are going to wipe out the people that make them their money. They had better set aside some money for building a fortress somewhere for when we come looking for them.
If that is so, it just shows us how dumb they are. Never bite off the hand that feeds you.
So EV drivers want even more tax breaks than those they already receive.
Let’s not forget that these BEV’s are heavier than a ICE standard saloon, thus they cause more structural damage to our already poorly maintained road infrastructure, they are highly polluting in terms of brake and tyre dust.
This latest gripe clearly shows the stupidity of the BEV motorist- anyone with a modicum of intelligence would know that without home charging, it is going to cost more because of VAT – knowing how the “Green” lobby mind works, the solution will be simply to change domestic electric VAT to 20% thus evening out the “unfairness” whilst promoting Net Zero aka Screw You.
To be fair, I had no idea charging had 20% VAT outside the home. And why?
UK drivers who pay fuel duty also pay 20% VAT on top, i.e. ‘VAT is applied after fuel duty’.

When we were prisoners within the EU, it was EU policy to impose VAT on domestic & commercial gas and electricity – the Government stated that this was not going to happen and agreed that domestic residences would pay a level of VAT at the minimum level, in this case 5%. Imagine if they had allowed the full 20% to be levied- we would have had a Government handing back tax payers money including a punitive tax that EU commissionaires do not even pay as their homes are designated EU offices which are except from VAT on bills.
True micda67, which leaves me wondering why we are still paying ANY VAT on our essential energy.
So not paying any road tax (currently) see the pun there, is not enough for the virtuous.
Not forgetting that EVs do more damage to the roads than equivelant ICE vehicles.
Life is unfair e.g. free resident’s parking for EV owners in Westminster (London), ICE owners have to pay for a resident’s parking permit.
Not really for the permit, as that costs the council nothing in terms of services. Parking permits are a great example of the slippery slope of taxes. When I first moved to London, Hammersmith & Fulham Council introduced them as a service to residents because commuters coming in to get on the Tube crowded out our parking. They cost was the administration cost. But over time they became a tax/revenue source to pay for other things.
Not really for the permit, as that costs the council nothing in terms of services.
There is a management cost and an infrastructure cost, although management should include enforcement, which might generate a profit.
Westminster also require motorcycles to pay for parking “To park in a solo motorcycle bay, you will need to purchase a permit.“

Westminster lied that they would spend the money on parking facilities such as security bars to lock bikes to but none were ever put in. The massive campaign against the council deterred any others from going down the same route. It was still in the High Court when I worked there and they were targeting camera cars trying to enforce moving traffic restrictions to ensure they didn’t catch anyone.
And the VAT ON the duty. Fuel is taxed at over 200%.
VAT is a crazy tax, levied arbitrarily without reason or sense.
Crazy?
I used to run an engineering company and remember receiving a letter/leaflet about the change in VAT status of an ostrich.
It had something to do with the change from a luxury item- feathers-to the trend for ostrich steaks.
I also received it in Welsh.
I originally thought you were joking (heads in sand etc) – then I checked. Quite unbelievable.
