Leaking Gutters? Blame Climate Change

It has now become the norm for our faceless bureaucrats to waste money by blaming climate change:

A court building which dates back centuries is to undergo renovations, with officials saying the work is needed because of climate change.

West Norfolk Council has given the Ministry of Justice planning permission to install new gutters and downpipes on the Crown Court on St Margaret’s Place, in King’s Lynn.

A design and heritage statement said: "It has become clear that as rainfall generally and locally has increased over time as the climate has changed and warmed, there are more frequent occasions on the site where existing rainwater gutters are overwhelmed.

"This has led to more frequent soaking of the brickwork walls and now that the mortar joints have been repaired and repointed there is a desire to prevent the gutters being overwhelmed and diminishing the impact of the investment in wall repairs."

The building has been used as offices since a new extension on College Lane was added in 1982, where both magistrates’ and crown courts now sit.

So where is the evidence of this “increased rainfall” in East Anglia?

Whichever metric you use, it is clear that there are no trends in rainfall, and that “rainfall is not increasing”.

I suspect any problems are down to poor maintenance, not climate change.

‘It has become clear’ that climate psychobabble is increasing in frequency and intensity.

The British Standards Institute has, for nearby Essex, an intensity figure of the “possible” emergency demand to be put on the gutters, in heavy rain, which should govern the designed capacity of any system. That figure is quite high at 0.022 Litres per Second per Square Meter because East Anglia while generally dry does have occasional “cloud bursts.”

Simple questions. Was the old system based on a lower number? Will the new system be based on the present British Standard of 0.022? Will the new system be based on a higher number? If the latter, is this precautionary and “knee-jerk,” or based on real studies?

How much will the guttering cost? I suspect a suspiciously enormous figure is already contained in a contract with a local business.

The declaration of orthodoxy speeds the approval process.

One wonders why you would need approval to replace your gutters.

        “…need approval…”

        A listed building?

Grade II, bigger gutters, makes sense, likely a bit undersized last time. Nothing to do with Thermageddon of course.

Three inches/hour for gutters and 2 inches/hour for drains used to be rule. 0.022 litres/second/m2 comes to 79mm/hour so that sounds about right. Perhaps nice cast iron rectangular gutters to start, then undersized half-round and now something like the earlier version.

O/T Nigel but did you spot this article in the Graun?

        https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2024/apr/21/south-east-faversham-kent-duchy-of-cornwall-next-poundbury-king-charles

I found the line relating to the grade 1 agricultural nature of the site “dull (if productive) agriculture.” quite astonishing. Since when did premium quality agricultural land have to look “interesting”? Only a prat in the Graun could come out with such a ridiculous line!

I am thinking of dropping the developers a line pointing out the site is under 4,000 metres straight line from a hydrofluoric acid production facility. I wonder if the King might want to protect his future asset base by stopping the Project Fortress site BESS. because he sure as hell isn’t going to stop “South East Faversham”

Perhaps if you couch it in terms of climate change you can get a grant for the new gutters. There are all sorts of these free monies available, courtesy of the tax payer.

just been to Whaley Bridge, if you remember the dramatic floods there were blamed on ‘climate change’ when in fact the Victorian reservoir failed through lack of maintenance. Well it now empty and its a construction site, too little too late. Exactly the same as East Anglia’s gutters. Another Council halfwit spouting out drivel.

That reservoir made it onto the Massive Engineering Mistakes TV series. Another British entry onto that series is ‘Smart’ motorways.

I have a leaking gutter, but I thought it was due to a faulty joint. I will have to inspect it more closely, because if it is due to climate change, then there is no point in repairing the joint.

    https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/where-we-work/north-west/restoring-toddbrook-reservoir

The BBC et al went climate emergency crazy when Toddbrook reservoir failed. However the design flaws that were the actual cause will take till 2025 to complete.

strangely the BBC don’t mention this anymore.

That’s why bureaucrats embrace climate change whole heartedly. The government never likes to admit its mistakes, it’s so much easier to blame climate change than lack of maintenance.

All local Councils, Network Rail, the Environment Agency and many other public bodies now blame “climate change” for failures in their infrastructures that are actually due to failures in their maintenance operations. It’s become a very convenient excuse for failing to do their jobs properly.

I have come to the conclusion ot is deliberate, so that there is a constant news feed of climate change. It is propoganda, and it is people being allowed to spread their beliefs no matter what.

Can anyone confirm if Cambridge NIAB Met Office station is still functioning?

I cannot find it on the Met Office WOW site as recording anymore and the http://www.ecad.eu site is actually only showing readings from Cambridge Botanic Gardens.

the overflow problem will be because they have probably made the man who clears out the gutters redundant
