BBC weather map row heats up over confusing colours

The BBC has been criticised for the colour scale it uses to represent temperatures, with lows of 11C shown as yellow while 41C is depicted as dark red.
The broadcaster has triggered confusion among some viewers with its temperature contour map, which switches to orange when temperatures hit 13C.
The colour scheme was introduced in 2017, with the BBC at the time saying it was intended to help those with colour blindness.
Toby Young, the founder of website The Daily Sceptic, suggested that the BBC was “going a bit far”.
“How is it going to represent temperatures above 20C? Fireballs?” he said.
A weather forecast on Tuesday night showed most of the country yellow and orange for Wednesday when temperatures were predicted to hit as high as 20C.
One viewer wrote on social media that the system was “utterly farcical”.
“I’m not a massive conspiracy theorist but I have to agree with those who castigate the utterly ludicrous use of bright yellow and orange/red on the weather maps to indicate temperatures of 18/19 degrees!” the viewer wrote.
Another wrote that the BBC “need to give their heads a collective wobble”.
“Since when has 13C warranted yellow/orange on the weather map?!” the viewer wrote.
A BBC spokesman said: “The colours used now range from blue for the coldest temperatures through to red for the hottest temperatures as these colours are easier to see if you live with colour blindness.”
Last year, the broadcaster was forced to clarify its colour scheme after viewers suggested that it had increased the intensity of the map to raise alarm over increasing temperatures.
An image that went viral at the time contrasted a weather map from August 2003 showing temperatures up to 35C with an image from 2016 showing temperatures up to 33C.

“How is it going to represent temperatures above 20C? Fireballs?”
—or, perhaps, just a hole in the screen where the heat has burned through…
I’m sure balls will be involved, but not necessarily fireballs.
Maybe that’s what Jerry Lee Lewis meant…..
One can ALWAYS rely on any announcement by the BBC on the subject of weather or Israel to have the same merit as an announcement by that nice Herr Goebbels.
BTW, anyone ever heard of an organisation called Ofgem? Probably another that has an over paid underworked chief executive….
I have followed Jonathan Brearley’s destruction of the UK gas and electrical regulator (OFGEM) over a number of years.
He regularly gets hauled before parliamentary committees and rebuked for his many failures, yet he his still there, what does it take to get sacked in the gravy train of government quangos.
OFWAT, OFCOM, OFSTED are all equally incompetent.
Huh, OFWHH ( Off. with his head )
I have no knowledge of Ofsted but in the case of Ofgem and Ofwat you might – or maybe not – be surprised to find that their actions are governed by legislation. Miliband made Ofgem become ecoactivists promoting unreliable, and therefore expensive, energy. Ofwat is guided by regulations that allow water companies to waste water and until recently let sewage flow into rivers and the sea. The recent activity by water companies to act on sewage is because of a tightening of the rules.
99% of his time and that of is staff is spent pouring over GB News programming second by second sifting out ANY dangerously none lefty opinion and worse, any opinion provided by white heterosexual christian males from England. They have no time to check famously balanced output by the worlds leading lefty and woke propagandist otherwise known as the BBC.
Ofcom don’t deal with the BBC as they have a complaints procedure in place that filters out everything. I think if you have gone through every possible BBC complaint stage – and long since lost the will to live – you can go to Ofcom.
I have had to stop watching BBC news and weather, It is all so biased, last night they had an interview with the father of the little girl that was killed on the illegal immigrant boat, focusing on his desperate need to better his life. She was born in Belgium and they lived in Sweden, just before they featured a small child allegedly killed by the Israelis in Gaza with clips of distraught parents.
I appreciate that the loss of a child is upsetting, but the BBC is using it as anti Israeli and UK government propaganda. Remember Hamas started the action on October 7th 2023 and the boat people are ILLEGAL.
I don’t know which News Channel it was on, but there was a video clip of this unfortunate child playing in a garden somewhere. She seems to have been a member of a comfortably off family. The thought did cross my mind why they actually wanted and needed to get to Britain on a small boat.
They had had all their asylum claims in various European countries refused and were going to be deported back to Iraq. So the father decided to bring them over here in a small boat instead.
boat people are ILLEGAL.
If our useless politicos and useless civil servants did the job they are paid to do (with my tax money) then the “boat people” would be taken back to France, or wherever they sailed from before reaching UK shores.
The asylum seekers who sail from France to the UK should be a French problem, not a UK problem.
“Remember Hamas started the action on October 7th 2023”
No, thats only the latest round;
It really got started in 1917 with the British ‘Balfour Declaration’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balfour_Declaration
The mandate system set up by the Allied powers after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire was established under Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations, and entered into force on 28 June 1919. It was a form of colonialism and occupation. The British got the Mandate for Palestine.
In April 1936, the newly formed Arab National Committee called on Palestinians to launch a general strike, withhold tax payments and boycott Jewish products to protest British colonialism and growing Jewish immigration. The six-month strike was brutally repressed by the British, who launched a mass arrest campaign and carried out punitive house demolitions a practice that Israel continues to implement against Palestinians today.
The British killed over 5,000, 15,000 to 20,000 were wounded and 5,600 were imprisoned
Then there was the ‘ethnic cleansing‘ by Zionist paramilitaries 1946-1949 (with the help of the British Army ), 500 Palestinian villages, towns, and cities were destroyed, 15,000 Palestinians were killed, & ~750,000 became refugees in their own land ( now ~6million living in camps).
[ 1948, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 194, which calls for the right of return for Palestinian refugees. never implemented. ]
And the forced partition of Palestine in 1947/48. The United Nations adopted Resolution 181, which called for the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states.
Since then there have been years of hardline Jewish ‘settlers’ forcibly taking Palestinian land & evicting the owners, Israel preventing Palestinian exports, general harassment & collective punishments, (& now another land grab + ethnic cleansing).
Hamas was formed 1987; due to Israels continued oppresion of Palestinians.
With all that background it’s now looking like neither side wants a two-state solution.
Sadly, history tells us this conflict will go on for 100s of years.
See also the ‘Troubles in Ireland’ … they started 450 yrs ago.
Certain things need to be said:
1) Israel has a right to exist.
2)The Jews have been in that location since the late Bronze Age. Their Temple was on Temple Mount.
3) There have been continuous Jewish populations there since
9) When the British left in May 1948, armies from five Arab nations invaded. This unjustified aggressive act is the reason there are Palestinian refugees. The invading Arab armies turned the land into a war zone, and therefore the refugees left.
10) Those Arabs who chose to stay have become integrated into Israel with their own Members of the Knesset, judges etc.
Israel is the only country in the region that upholds gay rights and also gives Arab women the vote. Gaza, has not held an election since 2006 and it has been almost 19 years since a leadership vote since the dear opressed Hamas took power after Israel handed back the Gaza strip , money, donations, weapons have poured into the region for what ?
It is a terrible lie to say that the Jews “stole” the land. It was the effort to annihilate them in 1948 that meant they were forced to fight back, and, to the surprise of many, they won the War of Independence. This involved territorial gains.
The “refugee camps” in Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan have been there since 1948, the Gaza strip was won from Egypt in1967 , after Egypt took it , after it and the 5 other surrounding nations of the religion of peace together attacked Israel the day after the British left in 1948 , the Gazans never complained about being occupied by Egypt , funny how that happens
There has been great suffering by Palestinians and by Israelis in the past century
The tragic truth is, it has been the desire to annihilate the Jews (as demonstrated so clearly by Hamas) which is the root cause of this terrible suffering
“which called for the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states”
Which was accepted by the Jews and rejected by the Arabs, who in 1948 attacked the newly recognised state of Israel with five armies – and lost big style, as they did again in 1967 and 1973.
There is not nor has there been such a state as “Palestine”, the so-called “occupied territories” – Judea and Samaria – were captured from Israel in 1948 by Jordan and ethnically cleansed of Jews, recaptured by Israel in 1967 and subsequently ceded to Israel by Jordan in return for a peace treaty.
As to “Hamas was formed 1987; due to Israels continued oppresion of Palestinians”, the Gaza Strip was captured by Egypt in 1948, recaptured by Israel and subsequently ceded to its Arab inhabitants in 2005, complete with substantial infrastructure and Industry, which the “Palestinians” promptly trashed.
Pre 07/10 Gaza was a relatively prosperous little enclave.

Life on the beaches of Tel Aviv and Gaza City – in pictures
The beaches in Tel Aviv and Gaza City, just 70km (40 miles) apart, are different worlds on opposite sides of a century-old conflict, but on long summer days Israelis and Palestinians enjoy some of the same delights.

Not bad facilities for a place that the antisemites tell us is the World’s largest concentration camp.
It looks like the BBC have taken a leaf out of Reading University’s Ed Hawkins and his much-lauded ‘Climate Stripes’.
Who allocates which shades of cold blues and hot reds to which part of the temperature scale? The Climate Stripes cover anomalies, so the true temperature range they cover is tiny, just a couple of degrees at best. Such a tiny range shouldn’t be deep blue at one end and bright red at the other.
A true representation of that temperature scale would see all those middle temperatures in neutral or slightly tinted shades, but then that wouldn’t be very scary!
I’ve posed the question many times online and never got an answer.
But 20C in Liverpool is definitely a heatwave that needs to be bright red. Liverpudlians would be falling like flies in such heat, brought on by “climate change”.
I am colour blind and find the figures for temperature perfectly ok as they have been for decades.
I’m still waiting for the 23c “heatwave”. Will the BBC weather map explode?
The excuse ‘help people with colour blindness’ is mendacious: there are several common types of colour blindness. A friend of mine sees shades of red as grays, but he is ok with blues, so the new red-heavy colour palatte is clearly not for him. I note the green seems to be one of the colours used: the most common form of colour blindness is red-green.
The lunatics took over the asylum a long time ago.
Slightly O/T but can anyone here help me in locating an alleged “official” Met Office weather station in Tynemouth.
I obtained from the MO the CIMO ratings for all of the weather stations detailed on this list.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-synoptic-and-climate-stations
However I noticed additional specific climate stations which did not appear on the above list and have requested details of these from the MO. A number of these extra stations seem to be very “elusive” notably the Tynemouth one.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-climate-averages/gcybzz9xh
Though it gives co-ordinates I cannot locate it on google maps/bing etc. At first I thought it must be my issue until I discovered that the station was reported as closed in 2001.
https://archive2.ceda.ac.uk/cgi-bin/midas_stations/station_details.cgi.py?id=313&db=midas_stations
Does anyone know the area or have other information to locate the site.
You see I actually think it doesn’t exist and there are quite a few others that I am equally doubtful about. And yet it is reporting detailed climate averages up to 2020?????
GB News is covering this but has our favourite idiot Dim Dale on and yes he is drivelling away. Emily ended the piece by wondering why the map is red and yellow on a cool spring day. I read that Dim’s agitation with Andrew and Bev yesterday was because they stated that Net Zero is making our electricity more expensive and he doesn’t do facts of course.
And on one news bulleting today apparently it was news that today would be the hottest day of the year so far. Is it just me but when did this become newsworthy? I can understand the hottest summer day of the year although these days it is fake news. And where was today’s heat measured? Our old friend Heathrow Airport perhaps?
gezza – ‘Hottest Day of the Year [so far]’ – always, January 1st. Often the next day, too. And any day slightly hotter [or ‘less cold’ in English] than its predecessors.
How long before we get ‘Hottest Day of the Month’?
Of the Week?
And Coldest – ‘Climate Change’ remember – after mid July!
I know this might be giving ideas to the cultists … but folks will see through this, at least.
I weep for my country, if not.

Maybe they’re just showing their rainbow support to the alphabet folk?
A while back there was an article on one of the websites which showed a European weather map of about 20 years ago and contrasted it with a modern one for virtually the same temperature conditions. The old map used cool green tones while the modern one was all yellow and orange…..
I deleted the BBC weather app when they started demanding a log-in from a ‘BBC account’. I replaced it with the MetOffice app – the same ‘weather story‘ minus the fancy graphics. The main problem with both is accuracy – the default Accuweather app on Android seems more, ummm, accurate. Yesterday, the MetOffice app disagreed with reality by about 5 degrees during mid-afternoon. But, hey. They’re ‘the experts’ after all. I expect boring old reality needs some diversity training.
“Yesterday, the MetOffice app disagreed with reality by about 5 degrees during mid-afternoon. But, hey. They’re ‘the experts’ after all. “
That’s really not surprising on account of the Met Office are not experts. The World Meteorological Organisation give likely site accuracy dependent on their CIMO classification detailed here
https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/courses/atsc303/Instruments/wmo_guides/CIMO_Guide_2014-Met_Site_Classification.pdf
Class 1 sites are the most accurate whilst Class 5 have a 5°C likely error margin i.e. junk.
Met Office noted extremes for 1st May 2024 were hottest from Santon Downham (Class 5) Lowest maximum from Inverbervie (Class 5) and coldest from Redesdale Camp (Class 5)
So as you can see a total pile of junk figures.
Here’s one that takes the temperature of Bradford West Electricity SubStation (the red kite marks the spot) which the Met Office claims is representative of the local area and apparently it’s better than Class 5!
