Just Stop Oil Nutcases Glue Themselves To Magna Carta Case

I think these two must be in the early stages of dementia:

Two Just Stop Oil protesters have been arrested after damaging the case around the Magna Carta at the British Library.

Reverend Sue Parfitt, 82, and Judy Bruce, 85, a retired biology teacher, targeted the glass enclosure around the historic document on Friday.

The pair then held up a sign reading "The Government is breaking the law" before gluing themselves to the display, footage posted online shows.

The British Library said security had "intervened to prevent further damage".

The Metropolitan Police said two people had been taken into custody having been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

The British Library said the damage to the case, which was caused at about 10:40 BST, was "minimal" and police said the document itself was not harmed.

Rev Parfitt, who held a chisel while Ms Bruce used a hammer, said: "The Magna Carta is rightly revered, being of great importance to our history, to our freedoms and to our laws.

"But there will be no freedom, no lawfulness, no rights, if we allow climate breakdown to become the catastrophe that is now threatened."

Isn’t it strange that you never seem to find any of these nutters with proper jobs in industry and other wealth creating sectors.

Yes, just the sort of jobs that pay for teachers and Reverends.

And maybe they should get themselves an education. The Magna Carta was all about rights and laws, not the right for nutters to go around doing what they want and breaking whatever laws they want.

They also might want to consider that when the Magna Carta was signed, England was in the middle of a golden age, thanks to the Medieval Warm Period!

But maybe they prefer the deathly times of the Little Ice Age, before fossil fuels lifted humanity to its present state of luxury.

But I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, and blame it on dementia!

Don’t say that, Phillip. I reckon I’ve improved with age, at least as far as the brain is concerned. The other bits, not so much.

“… there will be no freedom, no lawfulness, no rights, if we allow climate breakdown to become the catastrophe that is now threatened.” does suggest that something is amiss somewhere. I can’t answer for clerics (especially CofE ones) but I would expect better of biology teachers. Where, Judy, is your e-v-i-d-e-n-c-e??? In a nutshell there isn’t any.

Strange, that while JSO etc. are bent on civil disorder to achieve their goals (which are what?), the same people decry any perceived breakdown in civil society as a result of their belief in a malign climate.

Perhaps if they used a petroleum based glue they’d still be stuck.

Agreed, teaef. Take their hammer and chisel away and leave them there for a few days. “Use glue, get stuck.”

VW in Germany did just that, turned off the lights and heating. Wailing and gnashing of teeth started soon afterwards.

The government IS breaking the law.

That the laws are stupid doesn’t change anything.

Just 2 !?!? One filmer looked like a conspirator. There appeared to be at least 2 filmers in addition to the security vid. They should each get a night in jail to explain their presence, and give the cops time to check for any JSO connections.

These 2 fine citizens saw people attacking the Magna Carta, and chose to film instead of stopping them. Give ’em another night in jail.

Why would anyone be against more plant-food in the atmosphere (CO2). A new source of plant-food which is responsible for a 20% increase in food production, and is feeding a billion people??

Why would anyone think that CO2 is causing a climate catastrophe, when:

    a.  Strong US tornadoes have been reducing for 70 years.

    b. Tropical cyclones have been reducing for 120 years.

Face facts – climate ‘scientists’ and their pet media propagandists, have been lying to you for 30 years.

Anyone wonder why the Church of England is in a mess when in it’s dying days it took to employing the irrational, the illogical and the infirm?

Don’t suppose anyone told them the superglue they and their idiot kind are so enamoured by is made, you guessed it, from hydrocarbons.

A quote from paleontology I think graces this moment:

“Decadence and eccentricity is indicative of incipient decline and decay”.

Those two ladies got their message out with minimum effort, minimum actual damage and importantly, minimum inconvenience to the general public. If they get a sympathetic magistrate they’ve got a good chance of getting off scott free. It seems to me that they are far smarter than the morons like Ed Milliband who gave us the climate change laws in the first place. Seems to me also that JSO has realised that their blocking of roads was counter productive and are trying a new tactic. We shall see more of this kind of action.

The climate change act is a monumentally stupid piece of legislation and I can’t see it being repealed any time soon. There are too many boneheads in parliament. It means that policy will be determined in the courts by unelected judges instead of democratically elected governments.

    • May 11, 2024 7:38 am

If they get a sympathetic magistrate they’ve got a good chance of getting off scott free

The police / CPS could consider the conspiracy offence that probably occurred during the planning of the criminal damage. Pigs might fly !

Yeah, they didn’t knit them shirts.

I don’t see them going to Home Depot and asking, “What can we use to bust the case the Magna Carta is in?”

Conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor is a felony. Give ’em life. Investigate who else was involved, and bring them up on charges. I’m thinking at least 4 people should get prison time.

A serious government would take an attack on its founding documents as a high crime. You need a serious investigation and people in prison for it.

      • May 11, 2024 12:34 pm

You are right but I was thinking of the Extinction Rebellion protestors who smashed an HSBC window in November last year and were found not guilty by a jury.

      • May 11, 2024 12:43 pm

        You need a serious investigation

A charge of conspiracy could enable the police to investigate the “controlling minds” as well as the “minions”. Encouraging or assisting a crime is also an offence under English law.

My GUESS is that the reality is that the police and the “Crown Prosecution Service” (CPS) will seek to avoid anything other than the minimum legal action.

        I am – obviously – not a lawyer.

Last time I went to the British library I either had to check my bag at reception or it was thoroughly searched to ensure that I did not smuggle in the dreaded biro and had only pencils for notes . Security at other public buildings , eg National Gallery, Tate is the same . And most rooms open to the public have a resident attendant.

Yet these people apparently walked through security with hammer, chisel and placards and there was no attendant in the room with what is one of the most precious documents in English history .

Not credible. There must have been an employee (who would not be searched) who had made these items available and someone senior who ensured that this precious room was unattended.

Perhaps it didn’t happen in the way it was reported. The museum may have been in on it and made sure that nothing was damaged. It may all have been staged, and suitable photos taken by museum staff to ensure quality for the newspapers.

Chief executive of BL is Sir Roland Keating. ExBBC senior management . Married to Caroline Russell a Green party politician and activist who campaigns for London to be carbon neutral by 2030. (To be fair she also campaigns for safer roads , but her solution , 20mph everywhere, is not really practical as they found out in Wales).
