‘Climate change is here and it kills’: Lancet
By Paul Homewood
Yes, it’s the annual fraudulent Lancet report on climate change!
New diseases are spreading, the hayfever season is starting earlier and even the hours in which it is possible to practise sports are changing.
The common denominator behind all these and other changes to human health is climate change.
A new report in the Lancet has found that warming temperatures in Europe have far reaching impacts on health.
It tracks the links between climate change and health across the region, exploring 42 indicators.
As scorching summers hit the continent, heat-related deaths per 100,000 people have increased by 30.8 per cent from the period 2003-12 and 2013-22, according to the report.
Now 68 people per 100,000 are estimated to die of heat related issues, up from 50.8.
“Climate change is here, in Europe, and it kills,” the 2024 Europe Report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change said.
From raging wildfires in Greece to near-record high river flows in major basins, including the Rhine and Danube, 2023 saw a record number of days with “extreme heat stress”, according to the World Health Organization.
It caused the number of adverse health impacts related to extreme weather and climate events to rise.
In 2022, which also saw extreme heat, upwards of 70,000 people in Europe were killed during the summer months.
The Lancet report found that Southern Europe tends to be more affected by heat-related illnesses, wildfires, food insecurity and drought.
It also said that Southern Europe is also “more vulnerable” to climatic suitability for various climate-sensitive pathogens and disease vectors.
Research has found that environmental changes, like rising temperatures, can amplify disease risk in a variety of ways.
Climate change can alter animal movements and habitats, bringing new species into contact and allowing them to swap pathogens.
Newly introduced species can bring new pathogens with them as they move north from warmer climates.
Regular physical activity could also be in jeopardy.
Risky hours for exercise have been expanding into hours beyond the hottest part of the day over time for both medium, such as cycling, football, and tennis, and strenuous, such as rugby or mountain biking, activities.
Comparing 2012–22 to 1990–2000, the mean annual risky hours per person for moderate intensity activities falling outside the hottest four hours of the day increased by 107 per cent in eastern Europe, 382 per cent in northern, 94 per cent in southern and 101 per cent in western.
The report highlighted that this could “result in reduced physical activity” and therefore increase the risk of “non-communicable diseases”.
It said that regular physical activity is a key component of a healthy sustainable lifestyle, but that exercising in hot weather poses a risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or exertional heat stroke.
The Lancet’s “we are all going to die” message is rather undermined by their own study last year, which found that deaths from cold in Europe exceeded those from heat by a factor of ten:
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(23)00023-2/fulltext
Even in Southern Europe, five times as many died from cold:
The Lancet must be getting truly desperate, even claiming that people will get less exercise because of hot weather. The opposite is the case in most countries, as it is cold weather which stops people getting out and about.
They also mention wildfire activity, even though it has been reducing in Europe in recent decades, not increasing.
And their claims that cyclones are driving a surge in malaria fly in the face of the fact that cyclones are not becoming either more frequent or intense:
In other words, it is the sort of fraudulent report we see every year from the Lancet.
The report is not about science, it is all about politics, as they themselves admit:
I guess some organisation like the WEF is providing a lot of funding to Lancet. Otherwise why would they produce this garbage propaganda?
On their website they say The Lancet sets extremely high standards. We select only the best research papers for their quality of work and the progression they bring. What a lie!
Horton himself admitted decades ago that most scientific papers were rubbish and peer review didn’t work.
Horton is a self-admittrd Communist.
“The progression they bring” – What exactly is that supposed to mean?
The progression in the value of those nice BigPharma shares that Billy Gates, Klaus Schwab and George & Alex Soros kindly provided to Horton & his Lancet team?
Getting progressively worse !!
It’s the middle of May, I’m in the ‘mild temperate’ land of Anglesey
We have a cold wind from the east, air temp = 15C (feels like 8C) and the central heating is still on (normally it goes off last week of April), still wearing a pullover plus a padded shirt & lined trousers.
I’m more lightly to die of hypothermia than heat stroke!
Where’s this global boiling when we need it ???
Well it’s certainly not here in Devon.
But, if you are in Anglesey, you can easily nip to the Menai Straights and paddle out to lift a few rocks and fan the poor barnacles!
Justin (or Tintin as his wife calls him) Lowrat was on BBC news the other night vividly describing the terrible fate of barnacles that have (allegedly) experienced a “1ºC rise in sea temperature in the last 70 years” [BBC™]
Imagine the stress!
Now there is an interesting site on the web which shares “13 Facts About Barnacles”. There we learn that “Some barnacles can live for just one year, while others can survive for several years.”. Some bright spark can work out how many generations of barnacle will show up over 70 years.
Then there is “Due to their adaptable nature, barnacles have the ability to withstand extended periods out of water. They can tolerate exposure to air, temperature fluctuations, and even drying out, allowing them to live in the intertidal zone.” Also, more remarkably, “Despite their small size, barnacles have an unusual reproductive system. They possess a long, extensible penis that can be up to eight times their body length, allowing them to fertilize nearby barnacles.” Hence Lowrat’s interest, I wonder?
One wonders what news items ended up on the cutting-room floor whilst the BBC was transmitting this infantile bilge.
Of course, the Lancet has a purportedly more “scientific” (or at least, medical) basis than Justin. But ‘Editor in Chief’ Richard Horton seems closer to Trofim Lysenko than Ignaz Semmelweis, shall we say?
I suppose the looong penis does mitigate the lack of legs!
inherently lazy I guess.
“I suppose the looong penis does mitigate the lack of legs!”
Like Toulouse-Lautrec, known in the Paris brothels as ‘The Coffee Pot’ !
😂.
If far more people die from cold than heat, and heat deaths are easily avoided by aircon anyway, in which bizarre universe is it possible to increase deaths by an overall warming of the planet?
I know most doctors can’t even grasp the difference between absolute and relative risk, or understand that mass prescription of statins only benefits Big Pharma, but this is a bit dim even for them.
This claim must be treated with caution. It’s true far more people die during winter but most of that is caused by viruses. And to date, there’s no correlation between say flu and temperature. It is not therefore “cold” that kills and it is not clear that milder winters mean fewer deaths. Seasonality of viruses remains a mystery.
The Lancet has a climate change committee, for which read AGW-propaganda action group. They will not publish anything that contradicts their belief: I’ve tried and given up.
Amazing just how easy it is to destroy their propaganda!
“The report concluded that a lack of political action to protect people from climate change is one of the biggest issues facing Europe.”
But our lot are all over this – the government have responded to the petition:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/657353
So that we won’t have to endure a 3degC rise in temperature, as predicted by IPCC experts, the government is making climate change a priority. We’ve already done a lot, look, so the plan is working. And so have you, with 98% of people doing something to tackle climate change (using the mandated recycling bin, maybe?). And we’re persuading UK industry to spend £100bn more on green jobs and stuff. But we understand you don’t want to pay for it, so we’ll make sure you are educated into green choices, which will save so much money in the long run according to OBR experts.
So stop moaning.
Best regards, Rishi.
I think that summarises it.
An accurate summary Mr Brown of HMG’s response to the “survey”; pages of the usual AGW rubbish to every participant; total waste of time & our money.
it’s remarkable they can talk about threatened livelihoods with a straight face. High energy costs have made European industry uncompetitive with production in Asia powered by fossil fuels. The loss of jobs will lead to lower living standards that also result in poorer health outcomes. Obviously, the editors at the Lancet feel more compelled to support the well being of incumbent governments and their policies than the citizens who live in Europe.
They’re just another bunch of fifth column communists.
Not ‘will’ but ‘is’. The EU is already getting poorer from their stupidity. Hopefully there will be a Far Right surge in the elections next month but I see the EU have already tried to murder the Slovakian PM and are trying to do to Georgia what they have done to Ukraine. The Georgian protesters could look at Ukraine to see how well that has turned out as the final drive westward is about to be unleashed.
Maybe, as we have done for tha last 2/300 000 years we should put our efforts into just dealing with it rather than trying to change things we have zero control of.
just sayin’

‘‘KNOCKOUT BLOW’ Tories could face EXTINCTION if Nigel Farage makes comeback, expert says after Sun poll’ [13th. May 2024]:

Thanks Cobden, my question:
‘Since 1990 the UK’s output of CO2 gas has halved as we move towards a state of Net-Zero. Is there any way you can show or prove that our Climate has improved over this period?’
You could throw in ‘by how many degrees has the destruction of our industry and energy generation reduced global temperature?’ Or ‘how many hours does it take China to produce all the CO2 we have ‘saved’?’
King Canute’s worshippers didn’t die, but morphed ( evolved, perhaps) into leftwing climate change lunatics.
Give us their names.
Is ‘estimated to die’ a fate worse then death?
I guess it’s not a false precision fallacy when they are ‘estimating,’ but it still looks plastic-banana phony.
Ah, the old “huge increase in tiny number” fraud. 50/100,000 is 0.05%. 58/100,000 is 0.07%. So climate change has increased deaths by 0.02%.
Quick! Destroy capitalism!
But, but, Phoenix!
Increase in deaths 0.02%!
Whilst we’re all still scratching our bums and fiddling with our ties, whilst waiting for evil doom gas CO2 (UK and the West only), increasing from 0.0275% to 0.0420% causing “global average” temperature by to leap 1.5ºC (largely Winter nights minima at high latitudes) since the Little Ice Age.
MUCH worse than we thought.
Send more Grant money!
‘Huge increase in tiny number’ — sounds like CO2 😎
The Lancet has as much to do with climate as the IPCC has to medicine.
If, in the Lancet’s world, Climate Change is about the World warming, then cold deaths should decrease as heat-deaths increase – and balance out.
Where is the evidence that limiting a global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees C “wlll deliver life-saving benefits for people across Europe and beyond”? I presume this is 1.5 degrees C above the pre Industrial tmeperature in the Little Ice Age? And how would returning to the Little Ice Age temperatures benefit Europeans?
And what was the global temperature in 1850? How many Met stations in the southern hemisphere? None? Three? Error bars? Test question: why did the Paris 2 degrees become 1.5? Answer next week.
1850 was the meteorological Dark Ages. They have no f’in clue what GMT was in 1850. Nor 1900.
But Gamecock, the Cambridge University of Palestine has just told us that last year was the warmest in 2000 years. The last time the planet was this warm the Romans were around and Jesus was born.
Gezza….I think I better check for a star in the East and put our local shepherds on alert!
Seriously, how can any (cough) academic recommend a return to the LIA? They are mad – or LIArs.
Climate change attribution is an appeal to ignorance.
“We don’t know what caused it, so it must be climate change.”
Malaria has fallen enormously: what’s left is mainly in sub Saharan Africa. Shameful that the racist Lancet isn’t doing anything about this. The phrase ‘greenhouse gas emissions’ connotes a liar. It’s singular CO2 and if the Lancet thinks European countries can affect the rise of the Keeling curve, then they are ignorant, unscientific, superficial propagandists.
Yep.
“New diseases are spreading. How boring. We’d rather chase climate change unicorns. That’s where the money and fame is.”
Fixed.
So as I read it, Cold kills more than Heat, if you are too warm, you can take action, remove layers, take a shower, open the window, even go and sit in the shade, preferably in a pub garden; but the cold, usually affecting the elderly, has only one solution, heat, and for the majority this is now a luxury- either Heat or Eat, bit doing without either will Kill You.
The Lancet can bang on about current day weather, look back in history, whether they like it or not, the weather has been a constant- always there and always doing something.
Save a pensioner, throw another log on the fire in winter, open a window in summer.
Stop Press- forget the winter burning of logs, burn discarded copies of the The Lancet and get an extra glow of satisfaction.
“Newly introduced species can bring new pathogens with them as they move north from warmer climates.“
Like islamists?
Perhaps their religious intolerance and medieval outlook is caused by Climate Change?
In a lot of Spain and Italy, housing is not built with cold weather in mind as their number of cold spells is quite low, but when they do get one they will struggle.
Due to the vast number of illegals trying to get something for free and in exchange they pass on childhood and other diseases that they carry and pass on. Heat is not the killer but cold & rain soaks through and leaves the body open to corruption and weakness of the immune system. We are in the middle of global cooling and windmills are drawing moisture from the earth and blowing it into the clouds so the climate is changing because of the idiot wind turbines and solar farms
The simple fact is that in almost all summers the reduction in death rate due to the warmer weather is so great, that if anyone dies from heat it is impossible to discern it from the figures. So, such claims are totally bogus and without merit.
There are however a few summers such as 2003 when deaths of about 2300 did occur during an exceptionally hot period, that compares with a normal winter increase of 23,000 by one figure or 30,000 in the UK by another. And, there is an increase in winter deaths in colder years.
So FactCheck says: Utterly false and devoid of all scientific credibility.
Such figures should however be treated with caution. The vast majority of people in the UK die from old age (despite the quite bizarre claims made by ONS and others). That “age” happens regardless of weather but us often precipitated by a respiratory infection. Those rise and fall and exhibit seasonality, but in many cases, it simply means death comes 2-3 months later or earlier.
“Such figures should however be treated with caution.”
Absolutely right.
The total deaths are higher in the colder months. [UK]
There will be various reasons for that – but cold kills, so at least some of the higher winter mortality is due to cold [not wishing, or being able, to afford proper clothing & heating, warm drinks etc.], though consideration must also be given to the increased reluctance to go out – keeping active and meeting people, being mentally and emotionally stimulated – that winter weather inevitably brings on.
Auto
Speculation:
Cold – winter – brings low humidity. This can stress respiratory systems. Perhaps a cause of more deaths.
I’ve taken a leaf out of the climate alarmists/alphabet books and I now self identify as 197 and I plan to live well past 1000. Old age is no longer a problem for me.
Excess deaths from the jab, heat disease and cancer up … nothing to see here, all totally normal.
23,000 to 30,000 extra winter deaths each year and rising with cold … amounting to more dying from cold than in WWII … nothing to see here, they deserve it for being poor and unable to pay the Nut Zero price increases.
A statistically meaningless blip which amounts to a projected increase in some deaths in heat, when other come down dramatically because summer warmth is great for health …. the end of the world.
The UK is an unsafe place to invest
One reason is that people’s START POINT is to just accept the dramatic claims made in PRtrickster tweets as true.
Whereas I always begin by assuming the claim is NOT true until properly substantiated
Dale Vince has tweeted
I’m pretty sure Portugal did NOT run 95% on green electricity last month.
There will have been loads of fossil fuel use, some of it to make electricity
For a start there’s no solar at night.
People are suggesting he only looking at the one third of electricity that is locally generated
and NOT the other two thirds that is IMPORTED
I am delighted that Forest Green Rovers were relegated.
Just when the CoVid ‘vaccine’ looks increasingly like the cause of excess deaths and the results of lockdown, along comes climate change to save the day.
