    It is very noticeable that the BBC says the only reason people aren’t buying EVs is the cost. There is no mention of all the other reasons why buyers don’t want to buy an inferior product when they can buy a petrol or diesel car (e.g. insurance cost, battery replacement cost, rapid depreciation, range anxiety, lack of home charging, fire/explosion risk, etc etc)

    ‘Top journalists’ who ‘know’ that ‘the science is settled’.

    Pointless and worthless article (like all BBC output apart perhaps from TMS). Its only value is to show that even the BBC is forced to admit that there is a problem.

    When the bottom drops completely out of the second hand market, new EVs will be completely unaffordable for individual buyers.

      I think the bottom dropping out of the used battery car market will hit the only sector that is buying new battery cars – the fleet sector – very hard and cause their sales to collapse. Look at what has happened to Hertz having embraced battery cars and finding that people did not want to hire them and that they are expensive to maintain.

    What are ‘our climate targets’? I thought there was only one? Reduce CO2. By how much? What effect on global temperature? What chances of checking the rise in the Keeling Curve? All that would be interesting and technical journalism instead of the weak-minded sentimental drivel that the Guardian peddles to its ignorant readers

    The value of used EVs is plummeting. A quick search on the Cinch app revealed 273 EVs under £200 per month. The Nissan Leaf was one of the earlier mass market EVs to reach showrooms and you can snap up a 2021 plate on a PCP for £141 per month. They can keep it.

      Check out the MacMaster’s youtube video on the value of his Porsche Taycan bought on a finance plan for £120,000 and now worth less than £40,000 while still owing £60k on the finance. Porsche would give him a low £40k on a trade in but only for another battery car!

    The Chinese think much longer term than most western nations. They are smart enough to keep reliable generation while expanding manufacturing of solar, wind and EV’s. Much of their industrial export economy relies on being the low cost supplier for the hardware for the energy transition.
    The west put their economies in straight jackets with unreasonable emission targets. China is more than happy to supply the hardware that the west can’t produce economically because of energy policies making them uncompetitive. China then uses its success in green energy products dictated by western governments to buy up the supply chain.
    For the west, governments need to choose whether their manufacturing base is more important than their climate targets. China benefits tremendously if the west prioritizes climate. However, the Keeling curve shows no slow down in emission globally meaning that countries are merely moving emissions (and prosperity) offshore.

      It’s a much broader problem, Sean. It’s not just unreasonable emissions targets. The fascist US has 600 agencies – with police powers – telling people how they should live. Erstwhile businesses have to contend with up to 70 federal agencies.

      Companies don’t want to off-shore, but government makes them. China’s key competitive advantage is little regulation.

      It’s astounding that a nation founded on the principal of limited government has a federal government with MILLIONS of employees.

    I along with many other of your readers would like a clear and precise letter we can send to our M.P’s stating in simple terms the real dangers and costs associated with net zero, If the Conservatives went on a net zero reality campaign I am sure they would pick up many sorely needed votes.

    The BBC seem uninformed about the second hand EV market.

    “SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Air pollution has caused an estimated 49,000 deaths and $23 billion in economic losses in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai alone since Jan. 1, 2020, according to a “clean air counter” launched by environmental groups on Thursday.”

    Don’t know how accurate clean air counter is but Beijing is one place that could benefit from EV’s . Beijing has more than 6 million cars plus a lot of coal plants.

    More than 22 million residents, in Beijing 

    In the 19 years since this song many in Beijing have started using motorized vehicles. Mostly Motorcycles or 3 wheeled or other low powered and often very polluting vehicles. As China is producing so many EV’s it would make sense to give them to the residents. This would not solve the problem of the Coal plants and other industry that is to close to the City . Free and plentiful public transport would also help.

    Climate Change is a very expensive lie and ULEZ is another lie. But low level pollution is a real problem in some city’s.
