New Zealand to revoke oil drilling ban amid fears of blackouts

New Zealand was on Saturday night expected to revoke a ban on drilling for oil and gas amid fears of blackouts, as Labour plans to impose a similar crackdown on the North Sea.

The country’s coalition government is preparing to invite energy companies to resume exploration in the three major offshore fields that supply most of its gas.

It comes after National Grid operator Transpower was last month forced to warn families to limit their electricity usage to avoid a shutdown during a cold snap.

The decision to reverse the ban, made by resources minister Shane Jones, will be a setback for green activists and likely to be regarded as a blow for Labour after Ed Miliband has repeatedly pledged to halt new drilling for oil and gas in UK waters.

Labour’s net zero plans risk blackouts and public unrest, says Claire Coutinho (telegraph.co.uk)

Somebody should draw our politicians’ attention to the NZ action. Reading the above article, the subtitle should be “Vote Tory and have 5 more years to stock up on candles”.

Unfortunately, the survey also has this quote which demonstrates the success of the propaganda in the media claiming that renewable energy is cheap.

“The data also covers Labour’s key policy of GB Energy, a new, publicly-owned clean energy company. More than half (51%) of those surveyed believe this will help to reduce household bills”.

I suggest the 51% are woken from their stupor by showing them the strike price for the Celtic Sea project.

There’s the real world and then there’s net zero dogma.

This will make no difference to UK politicos who are hell bent on being World Leaders in “power blackouts”. Of course when the black outs occur it will be because of “14 years of tory rule”.

Shut down/out for about 5 years, I’d want a guarantee it would not happen again.

        “…guarantee…”

A guarantee is when someone ELSE agrees to fullfil the original promises, in case of default. When a government gives a “guaranty,”it is technically a mere “warranty” – i.e. a nothing, in the real world of elective dictatorships.

        True, Dave.

It’s why we see nuclear plant builders demand government put up all the money – government simply can’t be trusted.

The current Government is writing laws to stop future Governments shutting down the oil/gas/coal industry. How effective it would be is argueable

But the tide is turning! Any parliamentary candidates who call I am asking “what is the greatest existential threat to my grandchildren and their quality of life?” Of course, apart from nuclear war they all say climate change, and I agree while they dig a hole for themselves. I then point out that it is only a major problem because of their proposed net zero actions. Interestingly the new prospective Tory candidate had a balanced view. I await the visits from the others with interest!

Our Tory candidate is Sushi’s bimbo herself. Somebody here must have driven over a host of black cats as before her we had Gyimah – an arch Remainer who ran off crying to the LimpDumbs in some W London seat in never to be heard from again – who ticked the boxes of being black and a mate of Call Me Dave. We have 7 candidates including Reform, Monster Raving Looney Party, a Green named Khan and an independent former councillor who seems pleased to have sat on the Climate Change Working Group, nuff said.

Ticky. Tough choice between reform and monster raving Looney as to who talks the most sense. The others of course are certified loonies. I hope I get some alternates to choose from, otherwise its deface the ballot paper again.

Whilst I welcome this, what is more concerning is that we allowed activism in bed with rabid marxism to subvert our political processes in the West.

Any of their klymutt nonsense does not stand up in the cold light of day and why should it because the basis for their hysteria is a fraud, a fraud which defies both physics, geological history and recent human and archaeological evidence. Made up Krap upon made up Krap.

Like those wanting to be part of a religious club they do not understand, those wishing to join try to show themselves as super virtuous to prove their credentials. Nothing shows this more clearly than the asinine term inflation that the at best Arts graduate activists indulge in. We have been treated to Climate positive, climate negative, climate acceleration, climate melt down, climate destruction, climate reversal …the asininity goes on and on. It is no different to the equally absurd and marxist driven lgbtqxyzαβγδε adding a new letter every week demonstrating that they are making it up as they are going along.

if you are going to lobby your prospective MPs about the dangers of Net Zero, now is the time to do it!!

    • June 9, 2024 6:58 pm

      Good luck with that.

My experience is that my Tory – Chris – sends our bumph from the DESNZ; the Labour chap – Ben – mentions about ’70GW’ of windmills – no mention of the effects on local flying things – and refused to reengage when asked about batteries.

      Don’t hold your breath.

The only problem with Nut Zero is the reality of Nut Zero.

I always did wonder how far toward the stoneage we’d get. If it were a climb of Mount Everest, they’ve made their plans told everyone what they were going to do, created laws requiring them to climb the mountain. Spent all the money on the equipment, and then they went to the window and looked outside at the rain and decided to put off climbing the mountain to some undefined point in the future.

At what point do the ‘good intentions’ of Net Zero become a liability and from there morph into gross negligence in office?

That we’re even discussing blackouts, brownouts and rationing is a scandal of epic proportions, It demonstrates ideology is running wild while rationale, logic and all reason has left the discussion ages ago.

Energy security is national security and right now we’re being egregiously compromised by an energy policy that’s patently unfit for purpose. We can’t carry on like this.

Those responsible need to know that in the event of policy-caused, avoidable failure they’ll be held responsible. We need to reset the dial on culpability.
