July 19, 2017 Bangkok—Japan, China, and South Korea are bankrolling environmentally destructive coal-fired power plants in Indonesia despite their pledges to reduce climate-changing emissions under the Paris climate deal, analysts told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Australia-based environmental finance organization Market Forces said it analyzed 22 coal power deals in Indonesia since January 2010 and found state-run financiers for the three nations were involved in 18 of them.

In all, foreign banks, both commercial and state-owned, are providing 98 percent of the debt finance for the projects, amounting to $16.7 billion.

Indonesian banks provided just 2 percent of the financial resources for the projects, according to the Market Forces analysis published this week.

Japan, China, and South Korea "are on board with the Paris climate change agreement. They make all the right noises politically," Julien Vincent, executive director of Market Forces, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a phone interview.

But "these are the same governments underwriting new coal development elsewhere," he said, calling the actions "egregious."

Some of us have been pointing out this sort of hypocrisy for a while!

Indeed you have Paul, and in spades. Please keep up the good work, however, because, sooner or later, the MSM will start to take note and such madness and corruption will become headline news for the Grauniad, the BB and similar.
    And pigs might fly….

I meant, the BBC, of course.

According to WUWT, California Governor (Moonshine) Brown who claims that China is “leading” the fight against climate change alongside California seems incredibly oblivious to the reality that China is committed to building hundreds of new coal plants.

Moonbeam has been oblivious to almost everything for decades. Nothing new here.

I am probably remembering it wrong, but there was something funny when Ronald Reagan said almost half a century ago:

“I heard from Jerry Brown last night – it was a faint ‘beep, beep” from outer space.”

As I recall from recent history, some of these same folks were sore annoyed when President Donald Trump pulled the United States our of the Paris Climate Accord.

How much electricity do you need to produce bananas and coffee? I think these countries are trying to manufacture stuff.

    “…bananas and coffee?”

That view of Southeast Asia is about 40 years out of date.

    Said Fred.

“I think these countries are trying to manufacture stuff.”

said dangeroosdave. I read the subtext meaning that Indonesia is indeed wanting coal power for just that – manufacturing.

Are you being clever, facetious or obtuse – is it that you didn’t read the comment in full, er Fred?

What I want to know is, why do we [ here in the UK] are made to shut down our coal fired plant when most all other signatories to this dreadful act of industrial suicide – the ‘Paris accord’ are saying one thing and doing the opposite?

And then, Someone needs to boot mother theresa’s arse and insert some sensation into her ‘thinking department’ indeed the whole UK administration inclusive of those fekking eejits sitting in the HoC need their collective ars8s kicking hard and regularly.

I blame the people who voted for them. When will the people learn that our ‘democracy’ is a fraud.

It’s almost as if our leaders are utterly detached from reality!

      Detached from reality? Surely not.

I’m sure that sooner or later someone somewhere is gonna realize that cheap reliable power = civilization.

As to the much-vaunted Accord, I’m not sure what exactly it means. There seems to be a combination of wishful thinking, selective blindness, sanctimony, stupidity and deception making a foul stew.

Not much sign of it in South Australia yet. I guess they haven’t suffered enough yet.

Everyone and anyone interested knew the Paris accord was a joke, but the spin had to go on.
