BBC Gets It Wrong Again On Global Warming

The BBC are up to their tricks again!

London, 24 January: The Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) has lodged a new complaint to the BBC about its misleading reporting on global warming.

The BBC’s News at Ten programme on the 18th of January 2018 contained two factual errors in its report of the global temperature of 2017.

The errors were in the cue to the report by Roger Harrabin, and in the report itself.

The newsreader, Huw Edwards, said that 2017 was “the hottest year on record,” insinuating that global temperatures have continued to rise last year.

This is untrue. In reality, global temperatures have declined in the last 12 months. According to the Met Office, 2017 was the third warmest year on record.

In his report Roger Harrabin said, “2017 had no heating from El Niño.”

This is also untrue.

El Niño warming was evident during eleven weeks in the spring and summer of 2017, pushing global temperatures up accordingly.

2017 Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies in the El Niño 3.4 region reaching and surpassing the 0.5°C threshold;Source: NOAA http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/data/indices/wksst8110.for

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) there were El Niño “conditions” for nearly three months in 2017, but they did not lead to an El Niño “event.” A formal El Niño event was not declared because the El Niño heating did not continue for five consecutive three-month periods.

It is therefore untrue to say that “2017 had no heating from El Niño.”

“These are two factual errors that should be acknowledged with an on-air apology and a correction on the BBC’s Corrections and Clarifications page,” GWPF director Dr Benny Peiser said.

On a similar tack, I complained to the BBC about their fallacious claim last month that hurricanes are becoming more frequent and with Cat 5s becoming more frequent as a result of global warming.

This seems to be causing them some more problems, because they have asked for extra time to resolve it. That usually means they are having difficulty proving their claim.

Why are you only looking at Nino 3.4?

That is only a tiny part of the Nino region

But a big enough “cherry” for the BBC to defend Harrabin for picking it!

The warm waters across the whole NINO region for the first part of 2017 could not be more clear, according to NOAA:

According to NOAA! A lot of good scientists there but some dunderheads at the top. May have started in the early days of deep ocean exploration (early 1970’s) when deep ocean drilling programs failed to confirm postulated sea floor ages as predicted by theoretical ocean magnetic anomalies. Along with age discrepancies of ocean rocks dredged from other areas, this contradicted the new theory of plate tectonics. Not that there was a complete cover up by destroying data (the rock cores and boulders are stored somewhere) but the age dating were dismissed as erroneous and ignored as the science community adopted the new age hypothesis (actually it goes back to Alfred Wegener 1912). No matter the contradictions, the new theory was adopted as fact, Anyone questioning the details, such as mountain uplift timing in relation to the timing of the plate collision is now treated as a heretic. Geomorphologists Ollier and Pain point out a good number of inconsistencies in their book, Origin of Mountains.

The BBC frequently say they need more time to answer complaints.
They have several times been unable to answer questions which I have asked them in complaints.
I think this reflects their amateurish research prior to putting out news items.
Unfortunately they are better at covering up their mistakes by obfuscation.

    • January 24, 2018 11:29 pm

I do quite often get direct replied from BBC staff in email/twitter
… but OTOH I am blocked by 3 BBC staff and the PCC of Britain’s would be Greenest Police Force, for little more than politely asking questions with no swearing, accusations or intimidation.

    • January 25, 2018 3:22 pm

I took their need for “more time” as their need to come up with a palatable lie the public might swallow.

  4. January 24, 2018 6:57 pm

I commend the Global Warming Policy Foundation for calling the BBC to task on these biased and erroneous outputs. Perhaps it will concentrate the minds of the BBC greenblobs and make them a little more careful. But maybe not!

When has the Biased Bullsh1t Cartel and Horrorbin not lied about climate change?

    • January 24, 2018 8:06 pm

Precisely. Cardinal Harrabin is a serial liar. The hypocrite was on the radio earlier this evening reporting from Los Angeles (no mention of his enormous carbon footprint), on the environmental damage arising from rearing animals for meat. It was the usual one-sided coverage of the issue with no mention of the environmental benefits that rearing animals for meat brings.

It seems peculiar that if humans don’t eat animal meat they will have to eat plants (except for new trees of course) Aren’t plants supposed to sop up our added CO2? Have I misunderstood something? Something is “fishy”?

The warmists moan about species being driven to extinction, what do the morons think will happen if animals are no longer farmed for meat? Yes, let’s all keep a herd of cows just for fun and hang the cost if there is no commercial gain. I think not. Lots of our beloved countryside will change. No income from grazing sheep on chalk downland – no grazing, no downland.

Worse, almost every BBC radio program is littered with casual references to global warming and the accepted concept that it’ll prove disastrous. Not scientific comment, mind you, so nothing to retract, but concerned, knowing ‘um’s’ and ‘ah’s’ when the subject is addressed. It’s insidious.

And my real gripe is that whilst no one has demonstrated than a warmer climate will be in any way bad, indeed the past demonstrates otherwise, these alarmists are content to condemn my children and grandchildren to a barren, frozen wasteland.

RE: Repetitive references to “global warming”. In my local geological society, a recent lecture on a topic concerning 26,000 years of changing climate deduced from cave deposits in the UK, the professor was able to catalogue layer by layer changes in flora and fauna and the associated climatic changes that caused it. She never once mentioned the term “climate change” in her talk. However, she did end her presentation with the thought that on the basis of her research, the climate could change very rapidly within forty years, possibly even within ten years, and the sudden arrival of a cool spell or another ice age was something that really frightened her, for the sake of her future grandchildren.

I’ve also read that, an new Ice age advance can/is conjectured to come on in as little as 40 years, some say as little as 10 short years and equally as vexing; we do not understand the mechanisms causing such a calamity; from, a switch in the poles, sizeable meteorite impact/volcanic event – it’s all just speculation.

What I do know is that, at the critical moment, mankind is always caught with his pants down and that if another ice advance is imminent – which it could be – possibly, we will be nowhere although having said that, it’s going to be how are you in Swahili.
“I’ll tell you another” as Frank Carson had it, a very famous Northern Irish comedian, mainly that, when (not if) a return of the ice becomes the reality. Then, the Climastrophists and chicken littles will blame it all on MMCO₂ and the evil fossil fuels innit.

Oh and btw – that’s the other thing which is always an unvariable, THE constant – mankind’s collective idiocy.

I am loath to play their games. Play games no less, with their figures!

Indubitably, as we know well, the figures are endlessly ‘fixed’, thus, I set no store in bullyboys bullshit cartel’s statistical analyses and particularly so out of the mouthpiece of an English grad.

Furthermore, to claim that 2017 guestimates weren’t influenced by an El Nino event is stretching the limits of climastrology which already were as stringy as warm Mozzarella cheese.

Begone with you and take your flakey statistics and shove ’em where the sun don’t shine.

During a period of insomnia recently, I was foolish enough to turn the telly on (BBC news), and was confronted by an interview with some Aussie “expert” who was preaching doom and gloom about coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef. Both her and the studio presenter mentioned “Climate Change” numerous times as the cause, and how “We” had to limit temperatures rise to avoid catastrophe. After repeatedly shouting at the screen it’s a miracle that I ever got back to sleep…

But the BBC’s propaganda war is winning hands down.
The local council of Cheshire West in the UK has today (25-01-18) rejected a planning application by IGas to flow test its existing well at Ellesmere Port.
Frack-free groups add “hopefully our country is waking up to the serious faults and dangers of this type of fossil fuel development. We need instead to be concentrating on renewables and sustainable energy, to save our climate from the catastrophic effects of climate change.”
“This is to the benefit of our children and future generations.”
Then the council’s legal officers, who are supposed to be independent, added “In this instance the proposal does not mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change in ensuring development makes best use of opportunities for renewable energy use and generation.”
The brainwashing of the great British public will take some stopping.

And hidden away in the business pages, the BBC camouflages as much as it can the fact that the new low in unemployment is a 40 year record.

    • January 25, 2018 6:39 am

On that, the BBC are correct for once but they won’t have a clue why as their knowledge of the EU is no better than the rest of the media idiots and dumb politicians. The Mail drivels on about how well things are going post Brexit, managing to ignore an important point that it hasn’t happened yet! Ask them to define ‘third country’ and there will be silence. If you don’t know what it means and what happens when the UK becomes one, then you have nothing to offer in the way of knowledge. They still think trade talks begin this March too. M Barnier has made it completely clear that doesn’t happen until we have left in March 2019.

      • January 25, 2018 3:29 pm

If you think that is bad…..here the MSM simply does not report on the economic boom going occurring since Trump was elected. If you do not listen to Rush LImbaugh, Fox News or follow blogs such as those from The Heritage Foundation, you simply do not know. For example, unemployment vastly down, black unemployment the lowest ever, stock market reaching new highs on an almost weekly basis, companies giving bonuses since the tax cuts, businesses moving BACK to the US, etc. It just goes on and on, but the media is just silent on these topics.
