New Record Low Temperature For Greenland Set Last Month

A month ago, it was reported that a record low temperature for Greenland had been provisionally set on 2nd January:

Summit Camp, also known as Summit Station, is a year-round research station on the apex of the Greenland Ice Sheet. It is located some 10,500 ft (3,200 m) above sea level, and it’s data is often cited by climate alarmists claiming “Greenland Is Melting Away Before Our Very Eyes” and other such nonsense…

Adding to the list of temperature measurements those alarmists will likely ignore –or won’t even get to hear about given the mainstream media’s warm-bias– is Summit Camp’s preliminary low of -86.8F (-66C) set at 11:13 PM on January 02, 2020.

Image

The reading, once confirmed by the DMI, will enter the books as Greenland’s coldest-ever recorded temperature–not only at Summit Camp, and not only in January, but of anywhere across the island, and of any month of the year.

ImageTable of the old Summit Camp temp records (all-time low record smashed on Jan 02, 2019).

Somehow, in what we’re to believe is a linearly warming world, Greenland –the poster boy for global warming– is currently the coldest we’ve ever known it to be.

Furthermore, the Camp’s measurement isn’t far off the lowest ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere — that title remains with Oymyakon, Russia, and it’s 1933 observation of −89.9F (−67.7C).

To the best of my knowledge, this fact has not been reported in the MSM, nor by the official agencies, such as NOAA, DMI, NSIDC or the UK Met Office, as would quickly have happened if it had been a record high.

Neither has the temperature measurement even been officially confirmed.

I have therefore contact DMI, who have ultimate responsibility for Greenland, and received this reply from John Cappelen:

I have now had the opportunity to go through the American observations from NOAA GeoSummit from January 2, 2020 . I have at NOAA’s wab-site found January 2020 ftp data up to January 15, 2020.

January 2, 2020 was a cold day at SUMMIT and 23:13 utc the temperature had a minimum -64,9C…the same temperature was registered 23:15 and also 23:16 utc….data looks all right….I have attached 60 minute-observations of temperature in degrees celsius from GeoSummit NOAA (SUM)  January, 2, 2020 23:00-23:59 utc

As you can see NOAA GeoSummit measure the lowest temperature -64,9C January 2, 2020. I do not know if that a record breaking temperature at NOAA Geosummit. You have to ask NOAA about that?

At DMI Summit…now closed…the lowest temperature measured during the time the station was alive was -63,3C  on February, 21, 2002…but have in mind that DMI Summit only measured every 3 hours and that no min and max temperatures exist from that station.

https://www.dmi.dk/vejrarkiv/vejrekstremer-groenland/

I cannot see -66C as you mention in the GeoSummit NOAA data?

best regards,

John Cappelen

Senior Climatologist MsC, Science Writer, Data Management Specialist

Although the DMI equipment has now been closed, it was at the same location as the Geo Summit, so readings should be comparable.

Quite clearly then, a new record low has been set for both Summit and Greenland. Whether it is –64.9C, as stated by John Cappelen, or the graphic reading from Electroverse remains a mystery.

Nevertheless, we await the new record to be officially declared by NOAA, and reported in the world’s press!

Me either. It’s not verified and worse, inconvenient to the preferred talking point about climate.

Successful propaganda is achieved not so much about what you say, but what you don’t say, and which consequently your target audience never gets to hear about. All our major media outlets, both left and right, follow this rule, and it works. Ask Joseph Goebbels.

im sure it will be as a result of global warming causing a shift in some polar jet stream!!

But, the jet streams, like the ENSO and other oscillations, are part of natural variability. How can some added CO2 tell them what to do?

Posing awkward climate questions? Tut tut, bad form 😉

What is actually interesting though is the the rapidity of the change. The temperature dropped by over three degrees from 23.00 to 23.16, and then rose by three degrees by 23.58. It shows how modern measuring techniques capture rapid and large changes that previous measuring instruments might not have seen, or at least captured properly. Assuming the same thing happens with warm temperatures, it perhaps is a very good illustration of at least one reason why we are seeing more records.

That is especially relevant on airports where aircraft-generated hot-spots must blow about on a regular basis.

And in Australia – home to the biggest pile of crap pretending to be temperature records – where they have instruments reading every second, installed in small Stevenson screens which have replace the proper ones.

Shame we can’t help them out in the calls for a Royal Commission to look at climate change Down Under. The proposer believes that it will convert the sceptics but then this is coming from a believer who thinks that an honest scientific review will confirm his beliefs. If you have concerns about it actually being an honest factual review then you are not alone. But then maybe their over-confidence will bring about their demise.

Yes, this point has been made before. There has been a whole debate on this in Australia, where the Bureau of Meteorology sets its electronic thermometers to ‘sample’ over a much shorter timescale than the World Meteorological Organisation recommendation and this means that very short ‘spikes’ in maximum temperatures can be measured and recorded as the day’s max temp that would not have been picked up in the days of mercury-in-glass. There was also the example in one of the mid-West states in the US, where there was a discussion of whether a State maximum temperature record had been set – but it depended on which ‘sampling’ frequency was used to average temperatures whether the record had been broken or not!

Have you considered giving the “Scoop” to Aunty’s world-renowned Energy and Environment Analyst, R Harrabin Esq?

Heck, you might even get a h/tip and a bit of free publicity!

Last years high temp reading that got the msm in a lather was soon put down to snow blocking an air vent , leading to erroneous measurement. A suspicious mind might conclude that a reason will be found to explain away this new record, maybe someone left the fridge door open.

A simple Wiki search returns this Greenland record −66.1 °C (−87.0 °F), from “North Ice” on 9 January 1954. Incidently it is also the coldest temp recorded for the North American continent. The link in Wiki takes you to an Arizona State University site (https://wmo.asu.edu/content/wmo-region-6-lowest-temperature). There it says that “Northice was a research station established by the British North Greenland Expedition (Hamilton and Rollitt, 1957). Although the period-of-record is less than 2 years…..”. There is a map on the ASU site showing the location of the abandoned station. It too was on the ice cap but north of ‘Summit’ camp.
I guess that interim research stations don’t count towards an official record, no matter how cold the camp was.

It’s not an official DMI station, so it is not recognised

Move along folks nothing to see here. This is all to do with global heating vis a vis climate change, extreme temperature lows and highs is the new normal. Any vacancies on the Today programme by any chance ?.

      “…sensational-hoax…”

We sensible people daily suffer the equivalent of drive-by shootings from semi-official alarmists.

The following article, from 1929 [sic] , by the Secretary of the American Meteorology Society is interesting. The next time we hear about an “unprecedented” chunk of Antarctic ice plopping into the sea…

Paul, it would be helpful for the uninformed (like me) if you followed what used to be normal practice and gave the full name of the organization followed by the acronym, the first time you use it. I’m trying to decide whether DMI is a manufacturer of sprint car racing parts, a manufacturer of dart boards or a provider of mobile enterprise, business intelligence and cybersecurity services. All seem equally unlikely.

So, its coldest day ever in Greenland. How does that chime with the warming script? It does not. But Greenland is far away and anything that happens there will be ignored if it is not drummed about incessantly in the press. And this piece of information will be conveniently forgotten. Go check yourself. But there is a snag. Solar Minimum is upon us and we will have colder and colder days for quite some years now. And we will have them everywhere, also in places where people live. What we saw this winter was just a little amuse-bouche. There will be more, there will be colder and it will last a whole lot longer. But maybe Alarmists know this and that’s why they press on so frantically to get those CC laws passed.

At present, the sun is spotless, and magnetic activity is minimal. Not even any “solar froth” from new Cycle 25.
