Rural Afghanistan has been rocked by climate change. The past three decades have brought floods and drought that have destroyed crops and left people hungry. And the Taliban — likely without knowing climate change was the cause — has taken advantage of that pain.

While agriculture is a source of income for more than 60% of Afghans, more than 80% of conflicts in the country are linked to natural resources, according to a joint study by the World Food Programme, the United Nations Environment Program and Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency. In 2019, Afghanistan ranked sixth in the world for countries most impacted by climate change, according to the Germanwatch Global Climate Risk Index.

Over the last 20 years, agriculture has ranged from 20 to 40% of Afghanistan’s GDP, according to the World Bank. The country is famous for its pomegranates, pine nuts, raisins and more. However, climate change has made farming increasingly difficult.

Whether from drought or flood-ravaged soil, farmers in the region struggle to maintain productive crops and livestock. When they cannot profitably farm, they’re forced to borrow funds to survive. When Afghans can’t pay off lenders, the Taliban often steps in to sow government resentment.

"If you’ve lost your crop and land or the Afghan government hasn’t paid enough attention [to you] then of course, the Taliban can come and exploit it," said Kamal Alam, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center.

The Taliban has capitalized on the agricultural stress and distrust in government to recruit supporters. Alam said the group has the means to pay fighters more, $5-$10 per day, than what they can make farming.

"[Farmers] fall into choices. That’s when they become prey to people who would tell them, ‘Look, the government is screwing you over and this land should be productive. They’re not helping you. Come and join us; let’s topple this government,’" said Nadim Farajalla, director of the climate change and environment program at the American University of Beirut.

It is not just the American military, political leadership and intelligence services that obviously have no clue about what is going on in Afghanistan. It is also the academics and elites throughout the middle east.

There is a dangerous assumption that ‘the truth will out’. But this is not so. It is not uncommon for the root causes of events in history to be expunged from the later narrative.

How many Americans are familiar with the fact that it was the French donation of military materiel that enabled their War of Independence to succeed? It bankrupted the Ancien Regime who then had to call the Estates to get money, and it all went south from there.

I have never met an American who knows about this, and they will not accept the fact of it. The only people who know about it are the French.

I can think of other more contentious examples.

Your right Harry – it was covered on a UK TV programme a couple of years back. I have also seen material that alluded to it in museums in Yorktown, Virginia a few years back, but I didn’t see many citizens reading it.

It is reported the French and English are rescuing Americans since the Dementia President here went back on vacation after forbidding the US Military from leaving the airport. So thank you to the French and English for being the adults and rescuing the US once again.

Not the main reason the ancien regime went bust though, simply the final straw. Decades of war had bankrupted France.

The elite have failed to introduce their leftist woke transgender liberal Guardianista ideology in Afghanistan and they don’t like it, especially as it means the end of a lot of cushy woke NGOs jobs there. But as with all things of the left, there comes a massive amount of human suffering that they have to blame on anyone but themselves.

Contrary to Mr Davidson’s view, the truth is out there such as in the SIGAR report but just don’t expect the infants of the legacy media to go anywhere near it.

Haven’t they forgotten the main crop? I hardly think “and more” covers the impact of that crop on the west.

Isn’t it a bit strange that we don’t hear of thousands of Covid cases all across Afghanistan, especially when you see how closely crowded they seem to be on news video? And hardly a mask in sight.

That is quite interesting. I would suspect that the most likely reason is that affluent people move about more.

No. People notice if affluent people die. People only notice that poor people die when it is such large numbers and in the right circumstances so that it can be used for fundraising.

The graph reveals that the premise of the article is not just a lie but in fact the exact opposite of the truth. It also seems to show that the occupation has had a very positive effect on agricultural production. It will be interesting to see where the graph goes in the future.

“Rural Afghanistan has been rocked by climate change. The past three decades have brought floods and drought that have destroyed crops and left people hungry.”

So, where are the temperature data that would support that assertion?
Those in the rural areas away from the UHI effects “downtown”.

“Nadim Farajalla, director of the climate change and environment program at the American University of Beirut.” In Lebanon, the greatest worry is apparently climate change.

Nice to know that the American University is as rotten as any other.

What the chart clearly shows is:

    1. Decline in agriculture with the introduction of socialism around 1975.
    2. Precipitous decline following the Soviet invasion in 1980.
    3. 20 year return to 1975 levels after the Soviets left and the Taliban took over.
    4. Large drop with the US invasion with a relatively rapid recovery around 2000.
    5. Trend growth with small ups and downs since then.

It is the three major political shocks that derailed agriculture in Afghanistan, not climate change.

It’s not only the Trusted News cartel that are going all out net zero, the central bankers, big finance and ministers are taking the Carney line. Investment will be monitored and, unless it follows Green dogma, credit will be withdrawn. Net zero has been decided and the taxpayer and consumer will pay for it to end up in the pockets of the investment bankers, as this statement confirms.
