Ketchup At Risk, Squeeks Telegraph!

Tomato ketchup, a stalwart of British dinner tables, may soon be a much rarer commodity as climate change threatens to halve the fruit’s global harvest this century, according to a new study.

Ketchup is made from so-called processing tomatoes which are predominantly cultivated in California, Italy and China, all areas which are at-risk from global warming.

Soaring temperatures mean the tomato plants, like most crops worldwide, are being increasingly put under stress and a team of researchers led by Aarhus University in Denmark created a mathematical model to see how different future climate change scenarios would affect production.

    The only thing at risk is the credibility of the model authors, but that’s already at zero anyway, and probably the credibility of the journalists who believe this model-based tripe.

    The meja are ratcheting up the fear campaign again and any pretext is used. It is always “an existential” problem to come according to “scientists, experts and models”. Today I heard that the earlier summer weather in India is 100 times more likely due to climate change: no one queries these wild assertions of course, the “scientist” had probably never been to India and obviously had no idea of past hot weather disasters that were really serious.

      Well, Arse University is in Denmark so that would be the Danish taxpayers. Don’t worry, however, we have plenty of universities (not least the ever-reliable Exeter) collecting the bacon from us UK taxpayers for the same sort of “research” so we shouldn’t be smug.

    Ive just made a model of what will happen to tomatoes if there is a little more natural climate warming. My model says tomato production will vastly increase and prices thus drop due to the glut. My model factors in the fact that current cooler climes where tomatos require greenhouses (like the UK ,canada and holland) will start growing them outdoors in abundance. I think my model is better than their model 😉
    And when its warm enough to grow them outdoors in siberia just think of the surplus!

      Did they use RCP8.5?
      A few extra degrees in North America will expand the growing area.
      I can deal with the cool springs, but the early frosts turn a lot of “close” into mush.
      Farmers and home gardeners will adapt in a season or two and harvests will continue upward.

    I cancelled my Telegraph subscription three months ago after 40+ years for one reason only, their jumping on the climate change bandwagon!

    The Telegraph used to excel with its investigative journalism, sadly those days are long gone.

    My daughter particularly enjoyed this issue….when she was 4 years old.

    Surely warming is just what tomatoes need to prosper, that is why they grow them in greenhouses in UK and Holland, just how do the universities get funding for this rubbish.

    And now a note from your friendly plant taxonomist and plant ecosystemist in northern West Virginia. Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum to be specific) are in the Solanaceae or nightshade family along w/ peppers, egg plant, etc. The genus comes from Central and the western part of South America. Those which are indeterminate (producing flowers and fruit all season) are perennial sprawling vines rather than annual plants where the weather is warm year around.

    So, not to worry about increasing temperatures…..the tomatoes will be thrilled. However, I don’t think it will occur except in the minds of the environmentalists. I, myself, rather like ketchup, especially spread on toast. As the tomato is a fruit (specifically a berry) it is perfectly proper as a jam substitute. That habit was taught to me by a young exchange student from Mexico who stayed w/ my brother’s family in Colorado in the 1970’s.

      Few people realize the potato (S. tuberosum) is closely related to the tomato.

      Carolina nightshade (S. carolinense) is common around here. Pretty flowers, but the little yellow cherry tomato like fruits are dangerous.

      The irony being that Solanum encompasses many important food crops, yet has many dangerous species, too.

        Also Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium) is in the Solanaceae. Although an hallucinogen is is also very toxic.

        As to a family with both very important and very poisonous members: Apiaceae (previously called Umbelliferae). It is the family of carrots, celery, dill and many other herbs. But it is also the family of poison hemlock and other nasty ones. That is one not to sample when you see the ferny foliate and umbellate inflorescences unless you know what you are tasting.

      Good to read from a patient and thoughtful plant expert. Too often exchanges among our community default to clever/mild abuse. I see that the wheat harvest is under way in Alabama. Let’s hope that harvest in North America help to mitigate the damage done to world markets done by the invasion of Ukraine.

    It is sad indeed to see Research institutions like Universities wasting time and money on playing with models that are designed merely to attempt to push stress into people’s lives. I love the agit prop use of high urgency/danger adverbs and adjectives. “soaring temperatures” what drivel. The rest of the extract is a bunch of meaningless conditionals..

    The Tele screws up propaganda. If you are going to threaten shortages, use something critical to the public. Like coffee. Or beer.

    “There will be no beer in 2030” will get attention.

    On the other hand, threatening beer will get them hanged, so maybe better to predict condiment scarcity (OH MY!).

      Gamecock, ketchup has sugar in it! That is currently one of LibMob’s (especially the BBC’s) boo-boos, then there’s salt in it too, and it has to be manufactured – eeeek! it is processed food!! (not many have time to make their own ketchup) – so it ticks all of the boxes for taxing by LibMob in order to ‘do good to poor people’.

    A photo of Heinz ketchup? I wonder if that was a promotional handiwork of Biden’s climate change envoy, John Kerry whose wife inherited Mr. Heinz’s shares after he died.

      It would seem Biden doesn’t have the wherewithal to understand that tomatoes need sun and warmth to grow. His policy to ‘cool’ the planet (would it work) would only make his wife’s Heinz shareholding value decline. In the meantime, the ‘global warming’ policies he pursues just makes everyone else poorer instead.

    As a boy in the 1960s I used to accompany my father, who was a sales rep, on days out in the school holidays. We’d often go to the Clyde valley which in those days was famous for greenhouse grown tomatoes, and other salad crops. The greenhouses were heated using coal mined in the area (not considered green these days). The cheaper Dutch greenhouse grown crops gradually killed the industry.
    Despite having a micro-climate and fertile suitable for growing fruit and vegetables and being famous for its produce since the time of David I (reigned 1124 to 1153) there’s no sign of a resurgence in the Clyde Valley fruit and vegetable production as climate change takes out the producers further siuth

    Interestingly, the UK only has one delegate there, “UN High Level Champion for COP26”, Nigel Topping. US has 30, so we know who is running the show. Senegal has 17 delegates, Egypt,16, but they are hosting COP 27. Poverty and war stricken Ethiopia has 8 delegates, Kenya has 25. All these developing nations are seeking money from the west and will be agreeing proposals ready for COP27 that our politicians will seek to implement in the UK.

    Meanwhile, we now only have one fertiliser/CO2 plant in the UK, thanks to high gas prices and environmental levies:
    “CF Fertilisers will shut down its Ince manufacturing plant near Chester, which provides crucial supplies of nitrogen fertiliser and carbon dioxide.

    The company said it could no longer afford to keep the plant open amid spiralling gas prices and high environmental taxes. Production has been suspended since September.

    CF Industries will keep its Billingham facility open after the Government stepped in to secure a rescue deal for the plant with the company’s suppliers.”
    You will probably remember the panic about the shortage of CO2 not long ago, essential in the meat production industry, also brewing. Who could have predicted raising energy prices with “green” levies would kill off our manufacturing sector? Quite a few, as it turns out.

    A typical scare story, probably being hyped in order to get more research grants.

    The Telegraph could not be bothered to check that the particular scenario with the big drop in production is predictably based on the ludicrously unlikely and debunked SSP5-8.5 scenario. They also seem to have used a climate model with some implausibly large CO2 sensitivity since the claim is that the Tomato growing areas would experience 5C increase in average temperatures between 2070 – 2099 compared with 1980-2009 (!!).

    It is more likely that the Moon is made of green cheese than this scenario is anywhere near the truth.

    When will someone call out the modelerati for the scam they are living off? This is the klymut industry in a nut shell. We have hard empirical data based evidence for year on year records for production being set YET there is money for deliberately flawed models to be constructed where of course input dictates output. This desperate and sick industry is pressing every emotional button that it can.
    However there is something more sinister going on. The chief democrat wrecking ball in California, Gavin Newsom is deliberately causing a crisis among producers. California has a water shortage issue which is actually a water management issue. He and his cronies are deliberately engineering a collapse in food production by blocking a range of water management projects. Why on earth would he do that except the zealots of the left have no real crises to screech about so they invent one. This is not only dangerous, it is wilful criminality.

    There will be a shortage of some items such as peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers etc as the growers can’t afford to heat the greenhouses early in the season so output will be down. Is it ironic that the west, having antagonised Russia, has used the Ukraine war to distract from all the policy failures, including NetZero, only to find the stupidity of NetZero even more exposed?
