China is stepping up construction of coal-fired power stations and has ordered an extra 300 million tonnes of the fossil fuel to be mined every year as it apparently contradicts its own climate change commitments.

Beijing approved the construction of 8.63 gigawatts (GW) of coal power in the first quarter of this year, nearly half the amount seen in all last year, according to a report from Greenpeace East Asia.

There is a still a dangerous delusion in the West that China will stick to its promise to phase down coal use after 2026. But year after year, their actions speak otherwise.

    Ah yes.

I remember when British Coal and (after privatisation in 1995) UK Coal aspired to produce 30 million tonnes per year.

Yup. 30 Million total. Not 300 Million MORE tonnes.

But electricity was soooooo much cheaper back then!

What do the Chinese know that our politicians don’t know? Why do they give huge amounts to the UN and then on to the IPCC? Their sign up to this climate change hysteria is scant to say the least. Do our politicians not see what direction this is leading?

The Chinese always play the long game and it looks to me that they are watching the West implode economically while they are powering ahead. Excuse the pun.

They’re obviously very concerned about Shanghai being inundated within a few decades

Don’t forget that Chinese GDP/capita is still only $10,500. The US is 7 times higher than that. At a growth differential of 15% it will still take 15 years for China to catch up. And they won’t be able to maintain that growth differential for that long. So it’s at least 25 years until China is rich as the US, possibly much longer if the aging population in China proves problematic.

It’s my suspicion that China will be stuck in the middle income trap and its GDP may never surpass the US

    Why wouldn’t they?

Paul: Off topic but this CEH drought index resource usually shuts up the “1976 didn’t happen” but if you refer to it too much I am sure it will be deleted.

Sorry off topic, but…you have just got to love the delicious irony of this Guardian article.

So the runway at Farnborough hit 50C. And the UKs “record” temperature was recorded where?

Still waiting for an explanation of how climate change caused the heat! It was warm air from the Sahara, a place known to be hot.

If you watch any track or road based motorsport you will find that ‘track temperature’ is always referred to given it is higher than the air temperature and rises much quicker.

I imagine these new coal stations will have an expected life of at least 20 years. So China will not decrease coal burning for at least 20 years. You have to be very stupid to think China will close plants after 4 years.

20 years?? Surely they last 50-60 years don’t they?

They ought but it’s China and they are building them very quickly.

The National Grid are asking special permission to Export 34% more of our Gas to Europe to help them out. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/national-grid-emergency-bid-pump-174414396.html Lets hope we save some for ourselves. Gridwatch shows us, at this moment, that we are already supplying France and Holland with power down the cables, two and a half times more than all the wind is providing which is only 1GW. Gas is 57% of our supply and burning trees 8.75%. We seem to be helping out the EU even more than when we were a Member.

We get plenty of gas from Norway. We are just sending it on to Europe who are filling their strategic reserves as quickly as possible in expectation of further cuts from Russia in the coming winter. So long as we are making a net profit, it all sounds good…It is not as if we have any capacity to store gas ourselves, is it?
