Global Hurricane Activity Below Average In 2020

As the year draws to a close, we can note that, despite a busy Atlantic hurricane season, global hurricane activity has actually been well below average:

And in the US, tornado activity has also been below average, according to provisional data:

What is particularly notable is that again there have been no EF-5 tornadoes this year. EF-5s are the most powerful category, and it is now more than 7 years since the last one hit Moore County, Oklahoma in May 2013.
Since 1970 there has been a total of 36 EF-5s, of which 14 occurred in the 1970s:

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT 
Paul, is it possible this “static” situation could find itself in the main stream media and in particular the BBC? The world seems to believe everything of this nature is getting worse because of “climate change” while your graphs show no such progression. Surely this should be more widely known?
Dr Ken, did you see the horror or have you read any post presentation comments on the content of the Royal Institutes Christmas lecture given a couple of days ago and proudly promoted by the BBC? Paul presented his thoughts on it in one of his articles below.
What shames me is that the mouth piece supposedly a professor, educated in Geology trashed not only the mass of knowledge built up slowly over hundreds of years to make the Geological Sciences what they are today but to turn Science and the Enlightenment on its head.
What was presented to gullible children by an authority figure was no less than turning science into a political weapon rather than a means to find truth. Of course the way that is done is to ignore the basis of all science which is empiricism and just promote claims dressed up as scientific facts.
Sadly we live in a time of universal deceit. As George Orwell is quoted to have said, “In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”.
Friend, I have only watched the first one but wrote an angry rebuttal for the BBC people involved. Sadly, I did not have the right email address, so passed it on to two others in the BBC concerned about “accuracy”. I speak as a BBC pensioner, with 22 years service, who sought as a producer to be accurate and fair – others can judge how well I succeeded!
This lecture appeared to me to be pure propaganda, well divorced from the science that one might have expected.
The BBC has sadly sunk very low for many of us.
All three lectures were equally awful – nothing but propaganda designed to scare the kids. Whatever happened to proper science?
PS There is no science in “climate science”.
But the eco-zealots keep on howling that things have never been so bad. You give them facts and they stare with glassy eyes and then start up again with their “we’re all doomed” bleats.
Sadly you are correct.
The shear effrontery of it all beggars belief. Have they no shame? Apparently not when the zeros to the left of the decimal point in their bank accounts keep increasing and increasing care of Joe and Josephine Public and through fear mongering they acquire more and more power for themselves which is really what this is all about.
Imagine for one second if all this money were spent on a REAL problem, on cancer research for example or on infrastructure projects in the Third World rather than just keeping them dependent by giving them food aid and lowering post natal mortality which has resulted in a 27% explosion in the World population in only the last 20 years in those very countries incapable of supporting the populations they had back in 2000!

In the above figure of US Local Storm Reports (LSRs), the year 2013 stands out with only 943 LSRs, a huge drop from the max of 2240 in 2011.
2012 (in between the two) was the warmest year on record for the US 48 states. Could natural variability be involved? 2011 was a cool La-Nina year while 2012 through 2013 was completely neutral. No warm El-Nino anywhere since early 2010 and into late 2014.
