It appears that the Antarctic Sea Ice Extent has now hit its minimum for the year, and has begun growing again.
It reached the low point of 3.650 million sq km on 19th Feb, and currently stands at 3.736 million sq km.
Standard climatology, based on 1979-2000, suggests a minimum of 2.782 million sq km would normally be expected on 24th Feb, so this year’s minimum was 31% above normal.
Last year, the minimum arrived on 23rd Feb, at 3.116 million sq km.

This continues the trend for the last 12 months, when ice extent has been consistently and significantly above the long term mean.
UPDATE
Thanks to PhilW for pointing out that I had missed the “million” from the figures!!! I have now amended.

Poor old Ranulph Fiennes has had to call off his attempt to cross the Antarctic this winter, due to frostbite.
He really should know better than to try and fix a ski binding in -30c, even though it is only late summer there.
Of course, his team will be continuing with the attempt, but I fear for their safety in what seems to be a foolhardy enterprise.

It is all ROTTEN ice, and it is not in the right place… The “Global Warming” is worse than anyone could imagine. Run for the hills 9m of sea level rise is imminent. This will be far more damaging than the coming Zombie Apocalypse.
There is NO Global Warming…. only weather modification and geo-engineering using chem trails and haarp. We are heading for an Ice-Age. The people doing the geo-engineering are melt the poles so that they have easier ship passage and easier resource access. In doing this they are causing genocide & ecocide globally. Time to wake up folks.
thank you finally someone with a brain that still thinks on their own thank you long live the republic

This might bring into question the idea of a Arctic-Antarctic “seesaw” because the northern sea ice is still increasing also — unless seesaws have changed some since the last time I was on one.
“currently stands at 3.736 sq km”
That ain’t much! Hardly enough for to necessitate putting on skis!
Now if it were millions of sq km it would be impressive!
Ugh!!!
Thanks, Phil
Great blog by the way – keep up the good work!
