From the BBC:

As many as 1,500 of Indonesia’s islands could be under water by 2050 because of rising sea levels, it’s been reported.

In the capital city, Jakarta, the main international Soekarno-Hatta Airport could be below sea level as soon as 2030, with outlying districts turned into lakes, says Singapore’s Straits Times, quoting a report from Maplecroft’s Climate Change Vulnerability Index.

"This archipelago’s biggest threat is rising sea levels, where 42 million people living 3km from the coast are vulnerable," Ancha Srinivasan of the Asian Development Bank says.

Twenty-four islands have already disappeared off the coast of Aceh, North Sumatra, Papua and Riau, according to official research, and experts are worried this trend could accelerate. Indonesia comprises around 17,500 islands, of which approximately 6,000 are permanently inhabited.

Would it surprise you to find that the BBC have not been telling you the whole story? No, thought not.

The major factor in “sea level rise” in Indonesia has nothing to do with global warming, melting glaciers or wicked Republicans. It is that the land is sinking, as this study by Yanagi & Akaki in 1994 showed.

And they include these maps, showing the rate of sinking, and where the plates meet. Around Jakarta, the land is reckoned to be sinking at 8.7mm a year, about 34 inches a century. In other parts it is worse still.

But the BBC’s omissions don’t stop there. According to the Jakarta Globe:

So, when you add the effects of sinking and subsidence together, an odd millimetre or so a year is neither here nor there.

And, for the record, what is sea level doing, in other parts of the Pacific, away from the dramatic changes around Indonesia? Freemantle, in Western Australia, has a long running tidal gauge, and according to Church & White, the land there is rising by a relatively small 0.25mm pa.

680-471

Sea levels have been slowly and steadily rising by 1.54mm a year since before 1900. Furthermore, the rate of increase has actually been DECLINING in recent decades.

But don’t expect the BBC to tell you any of this. It suits their agenda to let you think it is all due to global warming.

I do wonder if they ever tell the whole truth about anything these days.

I get this impression that most people both skeptics & the apathetic majority have given up on up on BBC & aunties and just accept that the BBC is basically OWNED by the DramaGreens, so dramagreening is what we get.
    – Yesterday, when I told of how I seem to have caught red handed the ABC planting an audience question in a Q&A (with one ABC staff in the audience asking an outrageous alarmist question to another ABC alarmist he works with, without acknowledging he works for the ABC & often on the same programme !).. no one seems particularly interested.
    – Checkout 26min 30s broadcast on the ABC last Friday : Naked Scientists Q&A at the AAAS (Science Conference)

Whole truth, verifiable truth on the BBC,
    Sorry that is not compatable.

EVERYTHING is caused by AGW! Any thing they find will be used as an excuse for it. Better download that paper. It will disappear soon. They cannot have the truth falling into the public’s hands.

As Paul shows, real science trumps CAGW alarmist nonsense. Thanks for highlighting yet another sorry tale of BBC misinformation and obfuscation. They really are serial offenders – and yet somehow they seem always to get away with it.

And here we have the BBC reporting that islands are actually re-appearing in the same part of the world only just over a week earlier…Seems they cant quite make their minds up!

First – great content in the material you have brought together.

Second – is there a reputable on-line news source? I see many negative comments about the BBC and some others. Since James Dinglepole left The Telegraph I haven’t gone there. Ideas?

No recycling days caused by BBC Green Trolling me
BTW how did I know that JoelWerner audience member works for the ABC, cos I immediately recognised his voice from his alarmist series “Saving The Oceans” the BBC WS just broadcast.
That caused 4 no recycling days.
    – Feedback say they don’t broadcast skeptic complaints or skeptics praise for Lawson “we don’t get any”
    – Well almost everyday I am greentrolled by the BBC as they distort the truth in eco-matters.
The other day Tom Holland’s prog opened by telling me Climate change has destroyed Spurn Point, Except Spurn Point is in my patch and we know and he didn’t mention it continually gets destroyed and relocated every 150 years or so.
    – I realised I am powerles against he BBC destroying the democratic process, so to get back at their eço dreams I make every day they greentroll me a non-recycling day.
    – The Moral Maze the other day was reasonable so they earned an extra recycling day

It is disturbing to see how easily and quickly allegedly reputable news organizations, from the BBC to NPR and ABC, can be turned into self-censoring non-rational deceptive schills for a cause.

@Midas Jeez it like they are trying flip up your brain by broadcasting confusing nonsense.
It’s 1 month too early for April fools

      Log of BBC dramagreening
The BBC has on it’s payroll a long list of eco-warriors intent on saving the world who do their best to inject eco-drama into progs at the flimsiest excuse. I really struggle to keep up with logging it.
      – There was a staged activist (they organized thru a blog) bit on Feedback to protest against Lawson being allowed on Toady Prog (of course no skeptic angle to counter them)
      – Then than Costing the Earth Prog with Tom Heap 95% ecodrama
      – Then on 5 Live the Monday The Naked Scientists show was hyping the link between Extreme Weather and CO2 as being certain via Don Wuebbles (filled with errors, opened by falsely calling him a Nobel laureate)
      – Joel Werner’s Saving thes Oceans series is still running.
      – Over on World Service :Justin Rowlatt (@Ethical Man) use the series Elements as a vehicle to get Green propaganda angle into every episode e.g. the debunked theory we are soon to run out of phosphorous etc.
      – Progs like Science in Action, and Inside Science (Adam Ruthetford), Any Questions, Question Time, Thought FTD, Radio4 Comedy & Drama are owned by the eco-warriors.
      – Also Science Progs on Radio Wales and Radio Cardiff toe the eco-activist line.
      – Only 2 progs regularly discretely question the activist dogma.
      – While BBC online news ramps up the green angle all the time, funny how the story about the anti-fracking campasigner was buried away.
McGrath & Harrabin are surely on the GreenPeace/ GreenCorp payroll

Australian tectonic plate is pushing the Indian -> Himalayas are growing every year by an inch, to compensate for erosion —further: Australian Kimberley is rising – between Kimberley and Indian plate is Indonesia skwashed down, because action on reaction – in the middle is sinking – nothing to panic – that’s where the activity is, proofs are number of big volcanoes, from Rabul on the east in new guinea, right to Sumatra on the vest

The BBC report is just re-blogged from a story in the Straits Times:
    http://www.straitstimes.com/the-big-story/asia-report/indonesia/story/indonesia-risks-losing-1500-islands-2050-20140225

It might be worth contacting the author of the original story, Zubaidah Nazeer. I spent a few minutes searching for a e-mail address for her, but did not find anything. Perhaps ask the Straits Times or the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club, of which she is Treasurer—
