If anybody is still in any doubt that it is UNSCIENTIFIC to make claims about hottest years, without taking into account error bars, I would advise what the WMO had to say on the issue in their report on global temperatures for 2006:

“All temperature values have uncertainties, which arise mainly from gaps in data coverage. The size of the uncertainties is such that the global average temperature for 2006 is statistically indistinguishable from, and could be anywhere between, the first and the eighth warmest year on record.”

Paul, apparently NASA and NOAA know that, calculated the probabilities, but did not refer to them in the 2014 press announcements. Judith Curry spotted the official doc once Gavin had tweeted it. The link is far downthread over at Climate Etc. So the poltiticized media spin is now transparently self evident. Regards.

The situation for warmists is dire. Since they fundamentally believe rising CO2 causes rising temperatures, and CO2 continues to rise, temperatures cannot be seen to decrease. They can talk around a plateau, calling it a “pause”, but they absolutely must prevent a decline. First they got rid of the high temperatures in the 1930s, then 1998 went, now 2014 is the new record. Yet future years must surpass this last one, in order to hide a decline. Future cooling is not an option.

Inasmuch as the CO theory has largely been discredited as the main culprit of GW, proponents have now begun substituting another culprit, METHANE. Therefore the battle will shift from one gas to another while ignoring the true cause, the Sun which we need but are powerless to change.

It is not only the Sun, but also The Australian, the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and a number of other contributors, like the Telegraph.

Thanks Paul. Hottest year was already claimed months ago… This was thus no surprise, but if it wasnt for december… The mere fact that these “scientists” at NASA and NOAA dont care/mention the uncertainties of the numbers shows they are not scientists but politically driven manipulators.

If NOAA and NASA are using “adjusted” surface temperature data from the very suspect surface temperature transmitters, the claim becomes even more comical. Unfortunately, the press is a powerful medium and most people don’t look past the headline.

Account for methane venting from Siberia, and shallow seas.
