‘Useful idiots’ who let China off the hook: Why is there such an apparent lack of concern over their determination to keep burning coal, asks DAVID ROSE

Evidence unearthed by this newspaper shows Western environmentalists are enmeshed with bodies subordinate to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and staffed by figures from its most ruthless departments.

Last Thursday, China revealed its coal miners had achieved an all-time record by digging up 12.05million tonnes in one day.
Just two days later the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases reduced Cop26 minister Alok Sharma almost to tears by refusing to ‘phase out’ coal in the final summit agreement.
Judged by the benchmarks set by Mr Sharma and Boris Johnson before the conference, Cop had failed – thanks to China.
Yesterday, green campaigners hailed some modest successes, such as pledges to reduce methane. But back in the real world, China – whose president, Xi Jinping, did not even turn up – is still building coal-fired power stations at a rate of knots and the ‘agreement’ it reached with America to ‘co-operate’ on global warming lacked any substance.
Yet the campaigners in Glasgow barely mentioned – let alone criticised – China. A spokesman for Insulate Britain told me: ‘We mustn’t use China as a scapegoat.’
Some campaigners even heap praise on China. So why is there such an apparent lack of concern? One answer lies in a book called Hidden Hand: Exposing How The Chinese Communist Party Is Reshaping The World, by Clive Hamilton and Mareike Ohlberg. Serialised in the Mail last year, it argues that China has extended its influence over certain institutions in Britain and other democracies in order to blind them to Beijing’s drive for supremacy.
China, the book says, seduces politicians, business people, academics and campaigners into supporting its aims. It regards them as ‘useful idiots’ – unwitting instruments of its goal of becoming the world’s only superpower.
Evidence unearthed by this newspaper, working with researchers fluent in Mandarin, shows Western environmentalists have indeed become a target. Documents suggest they are enmeshed with bodies subordinate to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and staffed by figures from its most ruthless departments.
They include Xie Zhenhua, China’s chief climate envoy. Until 2012, he was a member of the central commission for discipline inspection, which enforces state orthodoxy. According to Human Rights Watch, it has been responsible for illegal detention, torture and forced confessions.
‘I’m dismayed that some leading Western environmentalists are talking up the CCP as the saviour of the world,’ Hamilton says. Take, for example, Professor Lord Stern, chairman of the Grantham research institute on climate change at the London School of Economics, which advises government.
Having taught in China since 1998, in 2009 he told a Chinese magazine he had ‘close contacts’ with CCP officials. In 2014, he wrote a paper for the World Economic Forum claiming China was ’emerging as a global leader in climate policy’. In 2016 he claimed China’s emissions ‘may already have peaked’. They hadn’t. The following year, he insisted there was ‘compelling evidence’ China’s coal use had also peaked.
Stern even praised president Xi’s ‘personal commitment to driving climate action’, concluding: ‘The world is looking for a climate champion. In China, it has one.’ But in March he sounded less optimistic, saying it is ‘crucial’ China stops building new coal-fired power plants and stops increasing its emissions by 2025.
Nevertheless, Bob Ward, Stern’s spokesman, told me China was taking ‘significant action’ and the rate of increase in its emissions had slowed enormously. He said China was ‘keen to learn from the UK’s example of world-leading action on climate change’.
Stern attended September’s annual conference in Beijing of the China council for international co-operation on environment and development – where he reportedly lauded Xi’s vision of an ‘ecological society’. Also present were a veritable who’s who of British, European and US environmental crusaders, including representatives of the London-based legal charity ClientEarth, and the WWF.
Another was Kate Hampton, chief executive of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), which donates tens of millions a year to green groups such as Extinction Rebellion. She told the conference she ‘supported Chinese leadership on setting the global path’. In May, she addressed a Beijing investment forum, praising China’s ‘determination to phase out coal’ – the phrase vetoed by Xie at Cop26.
What’s more, Hampton is co-chair of the board of the Belt and Road International Green Development Coalition, run by China’s environment ministry. It is an offshoot of Xie’s Belt and Road Initiative which Chinese leaders have said is the means by which China will supplant America. The CIFF, the WWF and ClientEarth run branches in China. Under Chinese law, any foreign organisation must submit to ‘close supervision’ by the ministry of public security, in charge of crushing dissent. Any group ‘harming the national interest’ risks having its staff jailed.
Canadian Patricia Adams, director of the think-tank Probe International, knows this threat is not theoretical. In 2015, two Chinese experts she was working with were jailed for ‘picking quarrels and provoking troubles’, the charge used against dissidents.
Meanwhile, documents suggest president Xi’s plan to create an ‘ecological civilisation’ is a means of furthering China’s dominance.

Oh, that horrible China. They burn coal! Can you imagine anything worse?

I bet Boris is overcome with emotion at Ward’s accolade that the Chinese are “‘keen to learn from the UK’s example of world-leading action on climate change'”
Such a wonderful back-handed compliment – essentially taking the p1ss out of Boris’s plans for NZC – while his boss, Stern, would surrender the West to China in a heartbeat (at the moment, it looks like Boris would take two).

Yes George, not burning coal and letting people freeze to death in the dark. I do often wonder why our wise overlords seem so gullible.

If wrong about absolutely everything else, which they cannot surely be, they are right to use coal which, bar H&S for the miners, pollution of the skies, which can both be controlled, is a vital, economical source of energy and, in its output of CO2, is harmless, by greening the planet.

The main controllers of the Earth’s climate are now seen to be the sun, cosmic rays and water vapour/clouds.

CO2 is thereby exonerated as the villain of the piece, it seems very likely.

I wholeheartedly agree with your first point, but much as I would like to agree your second point , there is as yet not enough proven evidence to state what the TRUE drivers of our climate really are.

True Colin, but I have a feeling (most important thing to have these days) that the Current Bun and it effect on Cosmic Ray background will turn out to be a larger effect than CO2.

But as you say the Jury is still out – sadly though the judge told the jury that they should ignore the Sun all together !!!

      • November 15, 2021 6:03 pm

Look at refs to Ratzer, Lightfoot, Svensmark, whose work is pointing to the sun and water vapour, interacting with cosmic rays, as the main movers of atmospheric and terrestrial temperatures.
Not fully, conclusively concluded, but I would be interested to learn of your reactions.
        Thanks.

cajw I read Svensmark’s book, I believe he has the real truth and that CO2 is a massive force for green and good BUT it has not yet been proved. I do believe that the facts already show that CO2 does not control warming but the powers that be do not want to know. The tried and tested scientific method has been binned and people only listen to the latest headlines however dumb they are.

      • November 19, 2021 12:45 pm

Thanks to Svensmark’s description of the relative minor role of CO2 in global temperature, all the decarbonisation efforts and horrendous costs are liable to go to waste.

Colin : ” there is as yet not enough proven evidence to state what the true drivers of our climate really are ”

It is proven the Sun is a climatic force majeure . NASA admitted this on the agency’s website only for it to be deleted in 2011

The exchange you have here with cajw comes across as confected

“… environmentalists are enmeshed …” with China. I doubt that that has much to do with lack of criticism of China, so-called environmentalists are mainly in it to bash their capitalist home countries.

Follow the Politics comes first with “environmentalists”, Follow the Money comes first with Big Green. Follow the Environment is mainly just to recruit the foot soldiers, especially children, and to ensure donations from gullible do-gooders.

Article in the Express today .
It does say that the UK only produces 1% of the man made CO2 emissions in the world .
But what it misses , [ or is not allowed to say ,] is that man made Co2 is only 3% of the atmosphere total , which is 413 parts per million , or 0.04% .
So that adds up to the UK s total is 1 part in 10,000,000 parts of atmosphere , or 0.00001% .
Anybody who says that tiny amount could have any effect on the climate is either ignorant or lying to push their agenda .

Perhaps it is like Homeopathy ITRW. The less you have the better it gets???

Joking of course. Totally agree with your comment.

Now that Kirchoff’s law has been shown to be wrong, which undermines the black body assumptions of all climate models – will GCM’s be quietly adjusted??

A PM of little brain – quite clever, but obviously now part of the globalist drive or is that drivel.

“Death Knell of Coal” says the man – what a cretin. Lord Sumption described Boris as a good Pamphleteer who was intellectually idle. He was talking about Covid and the lack of due diligence shown by the PM, together with the failure to consider collateral damage. Boris told a group of newspaper editors that he was not in charge and did as he was told. I am beginning to think that is even more suspicious than it first appeared.

The parallels with climate change and Net Zero are immense, including the smearing and denigration of good scientists who have been right for 30 years while numpties that have not got anything right for 30 years are promoted and rewarded. Is it corrupt or do you have to be apocalyptic to get a hearing?

I can’t make up my mind whether western politicians are all just daft or in on the scheme. Is it part of Common Purpose and UN Agenda 21? Articles in the Telegraph and elsewhere on how embedded the woke stuff is in Government, Academia, Media etc. The long march as they called it?

Back in the day all Russian material on science (including Meteorology) was translated to English. Respect for their science was high. It is no coincidence that the nearest climate model to reality over the last 25 years is the Russian one – even then a little warm. It is no coincidence that Russia are the only Arctic bordering block building ice breakers. They are in short supply elsewhere – why would you need ice breakers when all the ice is “gone”??

It confirms, if confirmation were needed, that China, Russia and India know that AGW is a fiction!

Another fiction is that high levels of atmospheric CO2 from any source can have any effect on climate, whatsoever!

This propaganda is based on human psychology. If a concept enters the human psyche often enough, with as much conviction as possible, people will refuse to disbelieve it. They can be shown the evidence, that is compelling and indisputable and they will still not believe it!

This was demonstrated at the end of WW2,

The Nazis blamed all their countries ills on the Jews, over a period of years, the Jews were portrayed with every negative attribute possible at every possible occasion. The public had to be protected, so the Jews were to be resettled, in the newly acquired territories of the Third Reich.

The German people were shown happy resettled people, in their new communities on the Newsreels, this led to the acceptance of the necessity of this policy. When rumours were spread about the horrific genocide that was being inflicted on decent, innocent people. They were dismissed as being too dreadful to be true, by the Nazis. “We are not savages” was one response by a senior, Nazi!

When the war ended, the German people had to be shown the mass graves, concentration camps before they would believe the truth.

I hate to use this comparison of a vile, despicable, genocide committed against innocent men, women and children!

But the question has to be asked, why are we being fed the biggest lie in the history of mankind?

isn’t is this a surprise ! and weren’t there strong suggestions that all the anti fracking protesters were also being financed by Russia, who didnt want competition for the gas monopoly in europe that they are now creating. And notice now diesel is up to £1.50 a litre and they reckon prices of food etc will have to go up to cover increased delivery costs. 10p on the price of an Avocado !! getting hit where it hurts……

Just look to the political affiliation of the “useful idiots”. claimed socialist to a man/woman/it/they. They see a kindred spirit in anything left of centre regardless of their morality. They forgive the unforgiveable…they are morally repugnant and potenders of chaos, the most dangerous people on the planet. They are those who come under the hijacked term “liberal”.
