The larger number of tall spikes to the right can be selectively used to claim things are getting worse.
4 columns of 6 hurricanes within a four decade bloc is not a large number and cannot be selectively used to claim continental landfalling hurricanes are worsening ……….Look closer David …….There are vastly more US landfalling hurricane seasons in the time series featuring one landfalling hurricane – intermingled with gap years [ [ the sequence from 2007 – 2016 ] – in the 70 year timespan from 1951 – 2021 as atmospheric carbon dioxide steadily increased , than the 70 years previously dominated by the 2’s 3’s 4’s and 5’s accentuated by the 7 spike in the 1880’s …That noticeable stepped pattern is what is nudging the trendline down .. Then there is the record Cat 3 -5 hurricane ‘hiatus’ from 2006 – 2017 experienced nowehere else in the timescale
Correction : the 2006 – 2017 Cat 3-5 hurricane hiatus seen nowhere else in the timescale from at least 1880 – 2021 . I was reflecting on the Klotzbach et al US landfall hurricane chronology
