Will somebody please tell me this is a joke?

Football fans are being encouraged to ‘score green goals’ for their teams and win prizes by taking up climate-friendly behaviours.

More than 80 clubs – including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United – are backing Green Football Weekend, which runs from 3-5 February.

Every action supporters take will earn points for their club, helping one win the ‘Green Football Cup’.

Some players are wearing green armbands this weekend to publicise the campaign, which aims to promote sustainable behavioural shifts among sports fans.

Could these be the same players who live in carbon spewing mansions and drive Lamborghinis?

And the same clubs who jet around Europe to play Champions League matches?

Surely not!!

The grass on the pitch should be allowed to grow several feet to absorb more CO2 and trees planted around the pitch for the same .

    • February 7, 2023 10:16 am

Most of the pitches contain fibres derived from oil no doubt to keep them so hardwearing.

All those fans travelling to enjoy a good football match should be banned to reduce the carbon footprint, in fact just play the games in a computer virtual world, no more overpaid footballers, all gone, no need for huge salaries, private jets. You know it makes sense…..go green, hypocrites.

  3. February 6, 2023 7:22 pm

And the arm bands I guarantee you will be made from oil derived synthetic material and no one will notice and if someone does watch the bought media shut the story down.

We live in the time of universal deceit that Eric Arthur Blair wrote about and the totalitarians do not even hide anymore because they think they have brainwashed enough of the output of schools and universities during the last 20 years that those people cannot see the nose in front of their faces.

I looked up various synonyms for ‘hypocrite’ that would better describe footballers. I came up with ‘fakers’ – but then realised it was a spelling error!

If there is one thing I cannot abide, it is Virtue Signalling!

Those that practise this over the top hypocrisy do so, not to raise awareness of an adverse situation, issue or problem, but to advertise their own ‘impeccable credentials’ and their personal need to deal with it.

Of course doing so makes them think that they are universally liked, however the very opposite is achieved.

Meddling. busybodies is the correct term!

Maybe they are playing for money.

Boss says, “Wear the arm band, or no money.”

Though the report says, “Some players are wearing green armbands this weekend to publicise the campaign.”

So “some.” Is actually some teams? Are individual players allowed to decide? Some NHL players recently told the owners they weren’t wearing no damn queer bands. NHL preening for LGBTMOUSE? That is not their customer base.

‘Football clubs have come under scrutiny in recent years for environmentally unfriendly practices like flying to games in private jets.’

By whom? If Gamecock were running the Premier League, he would have told the whomever to STFU.

‘In 2021, the Premier League signed up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework . . . As well as reducing its climate impact, the league pledged to advocate for climate action and promote sustainable and responsible consumption.’

Does ‘the Premier League’ think their product is inadequate? Selling football doesn’t work? I’ve seen the same schtick with the NFL in the US. The NFL’s audiance couldn’t care less about this stuff. It is tone deaf. No way to run a business.

The BBC has had a few tries at football’s habit of flying everywhere, didn’t domestically. But this isn’t aimed at fans. It’s aimed at keeping governments and busybodies off their backs for a bit. European football has massively increased its carbon footprint recently, adding teams much further away and adding new European competitions that require yet more flying – and which are played at night so require floodlights etc. And of course all the new matches are televised. So its an attempt to reduce scrutiny, that’s all.

Premier League shouldn’t have to care what BBC thinks.

We need a new unit of measure: the Davos.

Next time BBC complains, PL should tell ’em it was only a 0.01 Davos.

The long run idea must be to make football unwatchable, so as to bring to an end all the associated travel and association of people in crowds. What they will offer as alternative soma will be Greensim – except played out for real with your Tesco delivery of crickets to crunch in a power cut.

The green propaganda just gets ever more intensive. Apologies for then going off topic but I just caught the end of a Justin Rowlatt report on the BBC News channel. He was interviewing a green enthusiast and giving her the chance to answer contrived “hostile” questions with pure greenwash. When asked about fracking she calmly said that, if tapped, reserves would not last more than six months. This was of course accepted by Mr Rowlatt as gospel, and left unchallenged. She also said that surveys showed that climate change was one of the top three concerns of the British people. Again unchallenged, and again wrong.

I lost patience with the BBC a long time ago. When they banned Nigel Lawson was the final straw. It’s now only people whose views they agree with being asked predetermined questions, ITV is no better.
Unfortunately my wife likes to know what’s been happening although she’s gradually coming round to my point of view.

    • Phoenix44 permalink

Sadly far too many fans are quite happy to kill the Golden Goose. They support an idiotic “football regulator” that will take money out of the game to fund mediocre bureaucrats who will do no good whatsoever but who will stifle innovation and change. Far too few remember football pre-Murdoch, with endemic violence, rapidly declining crowds and terrible football.

      • February 7, 2023 10:22 am

Football fans simply need to see how other government regulators are doing. Ofgem – how is that working out for you in protecting you against German-employed thugs kicking your door down, after a supine magistrate has – probably illegally – signed off on a warrant while playing golf, to instal a pre-payment meter while ignoring that you might be a vulnerable user as they get a bonus for each door kicked in. Ofwat – how are they doing on keeping water companies from dumping sewage into our rivers while banning from using their product as gallons of water leaks from their pipework every second.

      • February 7, 2023 10:34 am

And having looked at today’s other article – how about Ofcom that is preventing honest media outlets like GB News discussing the Covid vaccines and what harmful effects they have on you while being useless. Is there actually any regulator or ombudsman who actually provides a beneficial service to the public?

Guys! It was just meant to be a joke to brighten your day. Something topical to contrast with the topic of the post.
I have no view on whether or not there should be more regulation. I do say that good governance is important: the game is nothing without its reputation. The same is true for all business.
On another matter, I don’t excuse Centrica for what has been happening. But could some have thought more about the consequences when they started that “can pay won’t pay” campaign a few months ago?

Wind and solar are producing 5% of the UK’s electricity at the moment. That is 1% of total energy need. Whatever happened to the proverb, “A word to the wise is enough” ?

Actually, I suppose, the deeper point of the proverb was that very few people are wise enough even to understand the proverb itself.

Germany not that great either ~25% from wind and solar; nor Spain ~50% Renewables with 21% hydro so in reality about 30%

Actually at this moment (12:41 GMT) solar is doing pretty well at 13% of demand. Wind is providing less than the two French interconnectors combined.

Yes – thought exactly the same. Included to make the reader think that Solar PV and Wind will be the largest generators in a few years. When in fact it is only electricity and more importantly only capacity. A chart showing percentage of generation Gwh, mtoe etc. would have been much more applicable.
