AOC Compares Climate Change To 9/11

Occasional-Cortex makes a fool of herself again!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for more urgency to address climate change on Friday, comparing its impact on Americans to the tragedy of 9/11.

The Bronx rep was discussing her Green New Deal on MSNBC when she said the devastation from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico was similar to the 2001 terrorist attack.

“On the events on September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans died in the largest terror attack on US soil,” Ocasio-Cortez told host Chris Hayes.

“Our national response was war in one then eventually two countries: 3,000 Americans died in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria. Where is our response?”

Ocasio-Cortez addressed the criticism of the cost of her plan by saying that the country needs to take action in order to avoid future catastrophe.

“So this issue is not just about our climate. First and foremost we need to save ourselves. Period,” she said.

“There will be no future for the Bronx. There will be no liveable future for generations coming, for any part of this country in a way that is better than the lot that we have today if we don’t address this issue urgently and on the scale of the problem.”

The Green New Deal was defeated in a procedural vote in the Senate by a vote of 57-0.  Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, dismissed the vote as a “stunt.”

And how, pray, will her plan stop hurricanes from hitting Puerto Rico?

Major Atlantic hurricanes were just as common in the 1950s. Prior to that, we have no idea because many were not spotted.

But we do know about the hurricane of San Ciriaco, AKA The Great Bahamas Hurricane, which killed more than 3000 in Puerto Rico in 1899.

Here is an extract from Stuart Schwartz’s account, published by Duke University Press:

Given that Puerto Rico’s population has tripled since 1899, the death toll then was quite extraordinary.

The Bronx

As for her claim that there will be no future for the Bronx, it is not clear that New Yorkers’ climate has changed much at all in the last 100 years.

Below is some of the long term climatological data for Cornell University’s rural site upstate at Ithaca:

Daily temperatures regularly reached highs before the war which have not been approached since:

Days of 90F and over were much more common in the past:

Severe droughts are a thing of the past:

And extreme daily precipitation is not getting worse:

Perhaps she think they are all going to be swamped by the sea?

If so, I doubt whether her policies will make the slightest difference, as sea levels have been rising at the same rate since Abraham Lincoln was President:

It is baffling how AOC has attracted so much attention in such a short space of time, given that she evidently does not have a clue what she is talking about!

I much prefer Willis’s description of her affliction: She has beclowned herself.

UAH “Temperature Anomaly” for March 2019 is + 0.34 C, which can be compared to
    + 0.37 for February.

The media love her. Free ‘copy’, always an alarmist message which doesn’t have to be believable to get people to read it, even if they soon realise it is nonsense.
She, of course, is trying to get re-elected and build a power base in the Democrats. Given their hysteria she probably doesn’t stand out in that crowd without alarming people.

What a maroon. Everyone knows it’s our WWII.

She makes Sarah Palin look a genius.

Sarah Palin is VERY bright and well-informed. Of course the media had to call her dumb. BTW, if you are one who fell for the “I can see Russia from my house” you are gullible. That was a Saturday Night Live statement delivered by Tina Fey. It took hours of make-up to have her portray Sarah and she was always a cheap imitation.

Agreed. The Left smeared Palin for rejecting their orthodoxy.

The key test for people like AOC is to ask how a surplus tax dollar should be spent. Should it be spent on improving resilience to extreme weather events, or should it be spent subsidizing things and destroying certain industries.

Climate Justice Warriors don’t want to solve what they perceive to be a problem, they want to exploit the problem.

She truly is ‘the gift that just keeps giving’ as far as the Republicans are concerned.
Long may she remain in the US public eye!

“she said the devastation from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico was similar to the 2001 terrorist attack.”: At best, the similarity is in the number of casualties. And, thus far politics have nothing to do with natural disasters, although AOC appears to say otherwise.

The freedom of speech = freedom not to listen, tis something which first should be taught in school, that it is not means we have 11 years of compulsory programming which is hard to undo, so many NPC drone children turned out just ready to be exploited, without the ability to become adults. Cortez is the symptom not the cause.

I believe this may fall under the premise that if you repeat lies often enough, they magically become true.

The theory that agw intensifies hurricanes derives from an assumed relationship between mean global sst and total global tropical cyclone energy. This relationship is not found in the data.

The great thing about electing a Climate Hysteric to office is that they get so much airtime and, unlike the scientists, are totally clueless. She really is setting the Alarmist cause back with these foot-stamping rants whenever she doesn’t get her own way. Long may she reign!

One of her truly shining moments was leading the charge to defeat the location of a large Amazon headquarters facility in her district. She succeeded and some

“Thanks for nothing, AOC,” reads a billboard now in Times Square, citing “lost NYC jobs,” “lost wages,” and “lost economic activity for NY.”

Some 25,000 jobs with salaries in the area of $150,000 were summarily broomed by AOC.

She crowed about what could be done with the $3 billion “saved” from not giving Amazon that as a tax incentive over 10 years. Somehow she thought there would be a pile of $3b. lying around for her to dive into and spend. Of course, that was not a pile of money and instead, she lost the anticipated $27 billion on taxes which would have been accrued during that time.

It was delicious to see and hear the NY Governor, the NYC Mayor and Amazon’s Bezos all whining about it. ALL left wing Democrats, hoisted on their own petards by their own petard.

I did not reread before posting. Please ignore the “She succeeded and some” as it was addressed below the quote.

There are a lot of memes about her going around. Some are not actually her quotes, but are just loony enough to be so I have to search to quotes before snickering and posing.

Earth ends in 12 years, or we are ruled by -Cortez.

I’ve thought about it. Going to live hard for 12 years.

That is a difficult choice. Have you ever seen a bigger brat with more mouth and power? I am guessing she will be brought down by her own.

Nobody apart from Trump seem to have questioned the rather novel approach to measuring the fatalities caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Those weren’t 3000
bodies dragged from the wreckage of flattened houses or drownings. The number was arrived at from the increased death rate in the year following Maria. The increased death rate came from the destruction of wealth and infrastructure, and is comparable to that experienced in Scotland during a normal winter. Trump of course was pilloried for questioning the casualty number, I think he was quite right to do so. His administration was being condemned on the basis of dubious statistics. Has anyone ever had to present justification for this? Or do we just see a number that suits a pre existing political agenda and therefore blindly accept it. As happens so often global warming.
