Climate change stopping soldiers from training, warns military’s green tsar

Heaven help our troops, with morons like this in charge!

The military’s green tsar has said climate change is stopping soldiers from exercises as it is increasingly “too hot to train”.

Lt Gen Nugee, who advises the Ministry of Defence on making areas of defence more sustainable, warned that on land, a warm year in the 2000s will “broadly” become a typical year in the 2040s.

He said this in turn will impact the military’s “ability to train, as we lose more days to being too hot to train”.

“In Cyprus, the projection is that all training will be lost in August to heat,” he said…..

In a speech at the Defence and Security Equipment International, Lt Gen Nugee referenced a recent study by the UK Met Office which identified that in temperate climates the number of days lost to training due to increases in temperatures is likely to rise by between 75 and 150 per cent by 2040.

Lt Gen Nugee also raised concerns that higher temperatures in the air resulted in reduced air density, which resulted in less effective aerodynamic lift. He said that the effect on take-off runs, in terms of reduced payloads and fuel capacity and reduced climb rates meant that “increased runway length is one potential outcome”.

He added that climate change needed to be made a priority “for all kinds of reasons including recruitment”, as he said that there will be many potential recruits who debate a career with the Armed Forces based on its commitment to tackling climate change.

How on earth does this idiot think the Eighth Army manged to fight in North Africa in 1942?

Temperatures around the world range from 80C below to 50C above freezing, so why should a half a degree of warming make the slightest difference to soldiers? They have to be prepared and equipped for every eventuality.

As for the nonsense about planes flying in hot weather, enough said!

I am sure though that youngsters will be queuing up to fight climate change!

Add a clause to Geneva Convention……No wars allowed if it is a hot day….. please. That will fix the problem of sweaty infantry.

Luckily, everyone forgot to tell the troops in the second world war that the planet would be the half degree warmer in forty five years that it is clamed to have happened, resulting in no one joining the armed forces.

I served in the armed forces. I can assure you that the last thing that ever really concerned me was that it might get a half degree warmer some days.

Just yet another “well educated” person who has no idea how to understand data.

I despaired a few months ago when a well-known journalist Tweeted a graph of Covid infections saying “no sign of herd immunity”. But if you graphed the percentage of people NOT infected it showed it had fallen from 99.4% to 99.3%. Data without context is meaningless, as every Alarmist understands.

    • September 17, 2021 10:59 am

I definitely think I’m a complete idiot and it only costs me a few thousand per year. By paying my council tax to Birmingham City Council, I pay for the masterminds who’ve brought in a clean air act in the city centre and fine cars whose exhaust fumes are deemed too polluting. Our local paper has just published an article stating that the bin lorries have so far amassed 834 fines which are going to be paid by their owner – Birmingham City Council.

Before I read this I’ve often wondered what a military coup would look like in the Midlands; now I’m very afraid….

Another moron who doesn’t understand averages. It’s quite pathetic how easy it is for the Alarmists to fool people in responsible positions. Does he actually believe that in 2040 every August day in Cyprus will be “too hot”?

  6. September 17, 2021 10:35 am

I guess there will be less snow and ice and as a pilot, I reckon the gains from that will more than outweigh the loss from the rare 50°C days.

  7. September 17, 2021 10:51 am

If it’s too hot to train then it’s too hot to fight. No more war! Global warming saves the planet. Don’t ban the bomb. Turn the heating up, drive to the shops and eat more meat. Win, win.

Actually he is right in one regard. Aerodynamics are adversely affected in warmer temperatures. My experience was sitting next to the pilot in a Piper Cherokee Arrow taking off at Kunnanurra, Northern Territory, Australia, in 1973. We found the fully laden aircraft required significantly more distance to get off the ground in about 40ºC and 90% relative humidity than the pilot was used to in average Melbourne conditions. Light aircraft would be more susceptible to such conditions because of their restricted power—our Cherokee Arrow had at best 200 horse power available. I doubt a military aircraft would suffer a similar disadvantage—at least not to the extent Lt Gen Nugee implies. This is just an example of stretching a fact to support a tenuous argument.

Adds to the stupid decision to end the use of the Lockheed Hercules which can take off from very short airstrips and is one of the best aircraft ever designed.

Air density also changes with altitude which is why Johannesburg has an extremely long runway and they warn you before take off not to be worried if it takes longer than you expect before the plane leaves the ground.

Nugee? He is not related to the lame brain Labour MP Lady Nugee is he? Would explain a lot if he was.

Taking off from Jo’burg was always an interesting experience. Generally departures were at night, the takeoff run was, as you say, long, but actually the limiting factor was often the maximum tyre speed, which we usually reached at rotate.

In the summer of ’76 temperatures at Gatwick was hot enough to reduce the payload on the BAC1-11, although it could be boosted with water injection.

How did the military cope that year I wonder /s

On a flight to LHR a few years ago, I timed a fully loaded BA 747 at 52 seconds from brakes off to rotation. Very interesting. I did this route quite often and timed many similar but this was the longest time.

As an apprentice in the aeronautic industry in the 60’s, I was responsible for turning aerodynamic calculations into takeoff tables, taking into account weight, runway length, and temperature. Also, I was in South Africa when the Concorde was being validated for its”hot and high” capabilities. Summer midday at Jan Smuts airport, Johannesburg could reach the mid-30’s easily!

It is f’ing hot in Cyprus that bits right, but it always has been. I went cycling there with some sadistic German cycling guide who assured me we would take it slowly, he lied! I think he was taking revenge for the war.

If Paul took a cycling holiday in Cyprus we would be shocked to see that it’s just like the English landscape is perceived to be by the climate change idiots.

I can understand the arithmetic — if you lose 4 days now then losing 10 becomes an increase of 150% but I’m not sure that was what Nugee was driving at. He seems to have picked up a piece of MetOffice hype and added his own spin.
Perhaps somebody from the MetOffice would like to pop in and tell us when the MetOffice became experts in army training requirements and what August temperatures they are forecasting for Otterburn in 20 years time and with what degree of confidence.
Of are they simply staring into the depths of their PS4s and pretending that is the real world — again!

This climate hobgoblin reminds me of the “pot monster” hysteria of earlier times. Today’s fashionable Assassin of Youth is likewise sold by apocryphal stories, curbside impressions, hearsay and appeals to superstition backed by the sworn testimony of expert whores before roomfuls of eager politicians.
