Surprise, glaciers either advance or retreat, thats it!

It was all the extra carbon dioxide from the Boer War.

Not a lot of people know that, the retreating ice caused the climate to come out of the Little Ice Age into this naturally following Modern Warm Period.

It snows more in the warm years when the Arctic Ocean is thawed, after a few hundred years of more snowfall, more ice advances and more ice spread on land and being pushed into oceans cool the climate into colder periods during which the Arctic Ocean is covered with Sea Ice. It snows less in the cold years but the ice continues to be spread on the land and continues to be pushed into the oceans for hundreds of years until the sequestered ice in ice sheets and glaciers is depleted, then the Glaciers and Ice sheets retreat into another warm period and this whole cycles repeats.

Therefore, there must be alternating warmer and colder periods, there is not equilibrium state in between, where an ECS might make some sense.

There are four states, there is hundreds of warmer years of building ice, there are hundreds of years of depleting ice, there is the transition from warmer to colder, there is the transition from colder to warmer.

Retreating Glaciers cause the transition from Colder to Warmer.
Advancing Glaciers cause the transition from Warmer to Colder.

These longer term cycles use stored energy in oceans to power the ice machines.
In particular, the Gulf Stream carries Tropical Energy into the Arctic Ocean to remove sea ice and power the evaporation and snowfall.
These longer term cycles use stored cooling energy in ice to sustain cold years.
The ice pushed from land in the Arctic Region Oceans chill the turbulent salt water currents to below freezing to form sea ice and stop evaporation until the Great Arctic Stores of Ice are Depleted.

Maurice Ewing and William Donn presented these Ideas in the 1950’s, they were discredited but History and Ice core data do indicate they were right.

Modern peer reviewed alarmist green house gas theory with a steady state “Static” Climate Theory, like Russian Lysenkoism, False “Green House Gas” “Static Energy Balance”, “Climate Theory” has dominated for decades.

I was in a lecture by a PhD Doc from Kew Gardens many years ago but in this century. He was a plant hunter. He’d been spending time in the Canadian Arctic and he gave the account of how the world’s third biggest glacier, if I remember rightly, if not then one of the top ten glaciers in the world by size had just upped and vanished between 1901 and the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. He said it made his job as a plant hunter much easier.

Before twenty thousand years ago, the ice age cycles were referred to as hundred thousand year cycles, those cycles were larger because more ice and water too part requiring thousands of years of warmer years to build the ice to start the ice age, followed by rapid transition from the warm to cold as the ice spread rapidly. Then there was a hundred thousand year cold period, while the ice spread and cooled by thawing and reflecting until the ice was depleted.

Oceans did not rise due to the thawing ice because the Arctic Region was depressed by the great weight of ice and that caused it to be downhill and fresh water and ice filled the Arctic and was trapped there until it started to break out twenty thousand years ago. The warming from twenty thousand years ago was rapid because the ice was depleted, the last Glacial Maximum was a Max Ice Extent time but the Ice Volumes were already depleted and the Great Ice Sheets had Thinned. Nothing suddenly started melting the Max Ice Volumes, they were already thawed.

Climate did not get as warm for this wonderful modern period with smaller thousand year cycles because the oceans did not get as deep because not all the ice thawed, Antarctic holds much of it and much is held on Greenland and other glaciers and ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere.

We are in a new climate period with smaller cycles because much of the water needed to warm the climate to previous warmer periods with deeper oceans did not thaw, it is still sequestered in ice on land. Modern alternating warm and colder cycles happen in thousand year cycles, instead of hundred thousand year cycles, because less ice and water change states.

The Northern Hemisphere has cooled for ten thousand years, this is the coldest warm period in ten thousand years, in the northern hemisphere because of the orbit cycles. Ten thousand years ago, the Sun heated the NH more and the SH less. The orbit parameters have changed that, now the Sun heats the SH more and the NH less. There is less ice in Glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere than Ten Thousand Years Ago because less is needed because we get less Solar Heating.
In that same time, since the Southern Himisphere has More Ocean and Less Land and More Ice on Antarctica, it has maintained the same temperature bounds over ten thousand years, more Ice and Water and less land makes the Southern Climate cycle in the same bounds, while the Northern Hemisphere has cycled with Cooling Bounds.

    And before then …

“Scotland had a glacier up to 1700s, say scientists”

I remember seeing period documents stating the loss observed by the Royal Navy in the mis 1700s. Not sure the location, but I am thinking it was along the Bering Sea.

The ground under a glacier radiates heat from isotopes just like the earth inside the mantle. Uranium content of oceans also increases over time. How much consideration is given to this source of heat?

Not sure about that. Long half-life and low concentration in sea water?
Geothermal heat coming from the mantle has been put forward as South African gold mines were apparently 70℃ at 4 miles depth. It seems likely that some heat is conducted up further and should it meet a surface insulating layer it could melt the ice from underneath. The recent discovery of a long river under the antarctic ice cap adds credence.
