“Renewables which are nine times cheaper than fossil fuels” where does she get that from? Last time I looked the residential electricity price in the UK was the third most expensive on the planet with fossil fuel rich countries having the least expensive.Iran is 47X cheaper than the UK.

Its the one day price difference that has since been reversed. Milliband spouted that nonsense in the HoC. It is, of course, bollocks. Any rational person will know Phoebe is an empty word repeater, but there are those who believe the claim is true.

It’s not even the one day price difference. It is the ratio between a CfD price and a one day gas price. Of course, none of the renewable energy companies are honouring their CfD agreements but are tracking the gas price instead and making obscene profits.

“When the lights go out it will be a different story.”
Therein lies the rub. It would be very simple to force the “lights out” and throw the country in complete chaos. A modest number of people acting (unpredicted) in unison performing perfectly legal actions could collapse the electricity grid relatively easily.
The problem is, would they just be seen as a terrorist group and blame be deflected away from the real green culprits?

The “Nine times cheaper” quote came from a group called Carbon Brief, funded by the European Climate Foundation. It is easily debunked but most politicians could not be bothered to check the sources.

    • Phoenix44 permalink

It’s the CfD bids that were not taken up at that price versus the top of the spike of the gas price. So a fantasy but now enshrined as “fact”.

The question to ask is therefore: if we have 100% renewables, will our bills be one-ninth of what they were in say 2010? That would make them around £150/year.

  5. March 31, 2023 7:27 pm

Wether it be Insulate Britain, Extinction Rebellion or Just Stop Oil it depends on the agenda. Why are so many of this class science illiterate ? Because they are picked by their masters for exactly this reason.
The real agenda of the funders to this movement are the likes of George Soros. Clever billionaires that aim to bring society as we know it here in the west to its knees. There are multiple attacks.
What else is there when you process so much wealth ?
Another example reared it’s head around 2014 :-

The west is under a sustained cultural attack. Everything that has contributed to western development is a target.
All our laws, regulations, guidelines, social mores, pursuits, everything.
It’s not by accident our borders are being traduced while our leaders voluntarily wreck our economy and social stability via Net Zero.
Activism is ruining the West right now, hidden in plain sight.

They are all the same people. Literally. A big company i know well that was suffering from repeated invasions of these people got intelligence from both the police and private firms. All one group with different names as appropriate and to make it seem as if there are lots of groups and lots of people. They are well-trained and funded, but the backing is a bit shadowy. Deeply undemocratic, fundamentally revolutionary Socialist, they want to come across as just concerned citizens but they are not.

A good blackout would do the trick. An orchestrated exercise, when the connectors are under pressure, with everyone switching on every light and electrical device at a peak hour would create havoc and just show the politicians how fragile the grid is and how stupid Net Zero is.

I have commented extensively about the issue of “taking down the grid” before and I am still trying to complete a novel about the subject.
Actually the “best time” to attack the grid by a sudden unpredicted demand surge is when it is on relatively low demand but with a very high proportion of asynchronous, low inertia generation active i.e. solar and wind. These were exactly the conditions of the August 2019 partial blackout. A key factor is Reactive Power, if the balance between real and reactive power is wrong then electricity effectively stops “flowing”. With a low inertia grid and low demand the effect can be dramatically quick (milliseconds) but a high demand grid with lots of CCGT running is very resilient. On one occasion both Sizewell B and Longannet tripped out within seconds of each other (a colossal loss of power) but the system very nearly held up.
For anyone not familiar with the issue of this “Phantom” power, here are good explainers
      https://www.techopedia.com/definition/15008/reactive-power#:~:text=26%20January%2C%202021-,What%20Does%20Reactive%20Power%20Mean%3F,in%20an%20alternating%20current%20scenario.
      Or this from Drax
      https://www.drax.com/power-generation/silent-force-moves-electricity/

The problem with this course of action is that the perpetrators can be readily attributed the blame to deflect from the real problems with the grid.
To get around this, anonymity is the key which is difficult given the number of people inevitably involved.

This was a classic example of dialogue of the deaf, at least on one side. Life is full of shouty 21-year-olds with purple hair; it’s just that they have never been as exploited by their ‘elders and betters’ with an agenda as they are today.
Rees-Mogg said nothing controversial in the clip I watched. He took no particular stance on climate; all he said was you can’t just shut off everything until you have something to replace it with. I would have thought even a non-scientific 21-year-old would grasp that.
The “nine times cheaper” canard, incidentally, is going to continue for as long as the chaotic and frankly dishonest method of sourcing electricity is allowed to continue. At the moment it appears to be a sophisticated version of the three-card trick or possibly the Humpty-Dumpty approach — when I sign a contract it means what I want to mean, neither more nor less!

      • April 1, 2023 10:08 am

Still further off topic, I agree 100%, the LTA did not, ever, in and of itself reduce anyone’s pension – it only reduced the increase in the “accrual” by limiting the gross increase to a specific level dictated by gross taxable income. Any suggestion that this induced salaried 40%/45% rate taxpayers is utter garbage; for those individuals able to retire “early”, which is cited in some quarters as a direct consequence the limitation of “accrual”, a very difficult question they, their advisers and most importantly their so called “professional bodies”, have to answer is – “Exactly what was the percentage reduction suffered by the member by taking his/her pension early?” – and watch “them” squirm. Percentage reductions vary scheme to scheme and unless these members were offered a “deal” – very problematical for the remaining members – reductions of 1% – 4% per annum of pensionable service ( just think about that for a second…) are routinely the case. So, a medic with 20 years qualifying service might be staring at a 20% reduction for retiring early – and that is something you do not see mentioned in any MSM article or from the likes of the BMJ.

I call it ‘droolally.’ When I get close to needing housing in a drool-factory, my wife plans to ship me off the the VA home in Boulder, NV. Its on government land where I also have my designated VA burial site. Its really a prime location: 1) Spitting distance to Hoover Dam; 2) overlooks the massive Mead Substation electrical switchyard; and is adjacent to the Boulder City waste treatment plant. Everything an engineer could want for his eternal rest.

‘Droolally’ is excellent, I used to talk bravely of a bottle of Laphroaig and slipping overboard into the chilly waters of the Swale with the autopilot set to sail back alone up Faversham Creek with a list of work for the boatyard on the cabin table. Timing is all of course and the joke becomes less amusing as time flies. This forum is as good as a good old moan in the pub so at least there’s still that.

Even leaving aside the contents of this young lady’s diatribe, just look at her demeanour. Some might argue that she is frightened and is passionate about setting the world right. But to my eyes she came across as spiteful and aggressive. Not a good look. Her very appearance (hair colour, clothing, facial piercings) posited her firmly in the political tribe associated with undermining Western culture. So, even if (a massive “IF”) one were to try to give credit to her arguments (hardly arguments, more just aggressive assertions), one would need to recognise that she has a wider political agenda of destruction.
I’ve been quite verbose here in stating the obvious! Apologies!

Why do we have to give airtime to these types of nutters when “sectioning” them would be far more appropriate. Is it really acceptable to have this person’s mental illness on such open parade?

Oil is going away soon anyway. Permanent geologic decline.

Last ditch shale plays in Russia…

Legacy oil = biggest funders of the green movement. “Just stop oil” etc, all this is is the government scientists cover for depletion.

Better to not tell the general public about depletion.

Half of people believe the lies. Oil = evil, green energy will save us. (Surplus oil is the only reasons 8 billion of us can exist, green energy is 100% reliant on a surplus supply of oil)

The other half of people reject the lies. But are unaware of depletion. “The government scientists are just trying to control us.”

Like living in a giant global insane asylum. Gonna start getting uglier and uglier each passing year.

Yes her point of view is nuts alright, but look at the even greater nutters who encourage her :-

He also chaired the Government’s Global Science and Innovation Forum from its inception. He advised government on issues including the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic of 2001; post 9/11 risks to the UK; GM foods; energy provision; and innovation and wealth creation. He was also heavily involved in the Government’s Science and Innovation Strategy 2004-2014.

Computer Science student .! They do not have time for other subjects like History and Geography, Languages. Unfortunately students of other subjects like Law or Political Science are under the same disadvantage but all of these graduates who are often politicians are graduates of the same types of degree . Education at tertiary level is fragmented too much. A general year before specialising at University should be the normal approach to specialised degrees.
We had that at Edinburgh . years ago. Otherwise we have people shouting at each other over a great divide. ( I think C P Snow wrote about it)

Poorly Zeroed is a novel describing a country that rushed into abandoning hydrocarbons too fast. Ms. Plummer and I have different notions on the way fossil fuels impact our civilization.
